Am I being targeted?

Is it worth reporting to the police do you think?
what are you going to tell them? someone nicked the painting you'd scavenged from the dump, someone played a practical joke with your trainers? until you can identify the person or persons doing this there's not a lot going to the police is going to achieve.

OK, thank you.

All you could do is ask around i guess. I had thought it might be people clearing the public areas up, but when the trainers re-appeared that's a bit bizarre.

I'd agree it's fairly usual for trainers or things to be left in communal areas though, either with notes for people to help themselves or otherwise and it was well respected when i lived in a flat.

Go round all your neighbours asking for a cup of sugar and see who has your picture :D

Put up signs "Beware Land Mines" and scatter some barbed wire about. Aim for the whole WWII vibe.

Or do some local extraordinary renditions and interrogate aggressively using the waterboarding technique.

I suppose it's a matter of far you want to go with it.

You could stop leaving your stuff outside of your property, warn your neighbours theirs a thief in the building and advise them to follow suit.

Or

You could spend a lot of time and patience trying to catch the person in the act, confront them (stand and bang obvs) and/or contact the police if you can provide evidence.

I should point out that what makes it weirder is that there are only three flats on our floor, and they are set back from the main staircase and separated from it by a fire door. So if it wasn't one of the two either side of us [and we get on with one of them really well] someone would have to come into our section from another floor to take the shoes.

This is probably the best course of action and yes, neighbours have been informed.

This is not really answering the question though since it's not just about the shoes, but the packages, other stuff being taken, not to mention our marriage certificate going missing a few weeks ago. It does look like I am being targeted.

Have to say I just wouldn't leave stuff outside.

I am a bit extreme in this. I don't even like leaving luggage away from my seat on a train as someone can just steal it.
But you never know.

Its probably not you. It's probably just theft.

I'd be setting up traps. Maybe a trainer with a mouse trap. Or a package with ink bomb.

Oh and a camera to catch the lols

Please thoroughly examine your trainers immediately!
Look for any small needle marks in the soft areas of the soles or any broken (and possibly restitched) seams around the inside.

Are the packages being messed with after they have been left outside your flat or in a communal area in another part of the building? If most of this is happening outside your door i would suggest a video doorbell or if you want to be a little more covert, then place a small spy cam out of the way facing your door. I would also suggest with either of them to make sure you get one that records to a remote storage (Cloud/base station inside your flat) as if its one that records to a SD card they could easily remove and you would not know who has taken it. Then when you have evidence bring it up with them and tell them if it happens again then you will be reporting them to the building manager/landlord etc.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Sounds like you've got someone objecting to or helping themselves to things left in the communal area. Unfortunately a down side to having shared space is the very fact others can access it easily
