Am I being 'tight' not wanting to share my broadband with a mate?

I wouldn't share it personally. It's your name on the bill so if he was to use your connection for anything illegal its on your head.

I had a neighbour turn up at my door a few years ago and just ask me for my WIFI password. I had to laugh... then tell him to jog on!

BT charge £130 to connect a disconnected line.

They'll also refund most or if not all of the installation charge at the moment as I've been looking into getting a new BT line. For just the basic line, no broadband services they were going to refund me £100 of the £130 charge - if I'd have signed up to BT broadband I would have had the full £130 credited back.

As to the OP sharing his internet? No chance! Unless maybe you have QoS or something similar to restrict access in place then I may consider it.

If he lived in my house, or was staying on a semi-temporary basis, or just visiting, then yes I would share for free. However he lives in another flat, why should he expect it for nothing?!

No, id make him pay £15 a month or not let him use it. His personal problems arnt your problem

One of my housemates didnt pay me for sky a few years ago and the other 2 people were paying me. I pulled his connection out the router that was in my room until he paid

edit - £130 for a new line? why?

As with most of the replies on page 1, I shared my connection via passworded router and set QoS equal between us. That was back in the days when the medium/L-sized NTL connection cost £25/month. They chipped in a few quid each.

I have no problem letting my family share my beloved broadband but if a freeloading neighbour wanted access for free I'd tell them to sling it.

Why would the OP even consider giving somebody outside his flat access, especially as he has a download cap (oh and really? A cap. Is this actually the 21st Century!)

Completely agree.

OP: tell him to do one.

I can't stand free-loaders.

no your being totally fair thats yours youve worked hard for it he either helps you out with bill and or buy you a router with QoS so you can limit him

Don't mess about with all this QoS nonsense. He doesn't live with you, you don't owe him anything and if he needs broadband that desperately then he'll need to make some changes to how he spends his money.

Seriously, 'throttle his bandwidth' is just such a passive aggressive stance it should surprise me more than it actually does.

Definitely don't ask for money but don't share it either if you don't want to, just say you don't want the hassle.

That is, the problem with charging is that the guy will feel suitably entitled to his share of the connection to the extent that his usage will likely impact on yours and as he's paying for it you're not really in a strong position to complain. Worse still, the moment something goes wrong with the connection he'll be knocking on your door.
He wants to use it to surf the net, facebook, watch sky online using he's mums membership number, and down the "odd movie".
Doesn't seem very worthy anyway.

Tell him to do one. I wouldn't share my internet connection even if he offered to pay half of it. But then again, I am a very heavy user. So it depends on the circumstances.

80gb cap and 16mb??? That's really expensive for £30 a month.

I don't see an 80gb cap package here http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25633&Infinity=no

Is there no other providers in your area?

Personally I'm with sky. I have 20mb connection with 2mb download and unlimited usage, line rental is with bt. I have downloaded 2tb within the last couple of weeks and have yet to be capped.

Just got SKY contract as well, £0 connection fee, lI think £12 for the first 6 months including line rental for unlimited cap, 20mb speed limit and £17 after the first 6 months.

You lot are bloody shocking, its an internet connection. Give him access, if he starts to use it badly then say something or remove access at that point.

Be the bigger man here, give your mate a chance, if he then takes the **** fair enough. If I had friends like you lot, I'd be bloody worried!
