Am I getting too old for PC gaming?

You should try role-playing story driven games if you really want to be drawn in. Assassins Creed is just a snore-fest so no wonder you got bored playing it

Assassin's Creed2 is very much broader in all aspects compared to Assassin's Creed1. I agree that AC1 started great but became very repetitive. But AC2 is much more longer and looks much better aswell.

Well Im only 29 so cant completely comment on ther reaction time bit, but I no a lot of what is passed off as reaction time is just hours spent playing the game. Most good fps players have 20 hours a week logged on the game which is difficult with a job/family etc.

As for good games, Ive enjoyed metro 2033 so far, however, Im not very far through. Might be of interest for you. If not some total war maybe you thing.

I'm considering selling up already and getting a PS3 for playing more 'leisurely' games like Tiger Woods, FIFA, G1 Jockey and Red Dead Redemption.

Has there been a cut off point for you? And at what age? Have your gaming choices and preferences changed as you've got older?

I'm older than you and have gone the complete opposite. Leisurely console games are as big a turn-off as it gets for me. If there is no depth to a game I can't stand it. Hence my shooter days are over, not because I felt my reactions were getting slow but just find them so mind-numbingly boring and shallow. As I get older, deep strategy, rpg, sims etc are becoming far more attractive. And those sort of games are the domain of the PC.....only PC games I've burnt out from are MMOs.

try galactic civ 2.

OK so I seem to be the oldest on here at 51 and still playing pc games like mad. I tend to stay with the earlier Total War series of games, so not Empire etc and then an old game Vga Planets.

Remember, you're as young as you feel.

:)

I bought a GTX 460 the other day to try and get back into some PC gaming. I bought COD4 MW, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and Crysis on the reccomendations of this forum.

The thing is, I just cannot get back into the swing of things. I'm just not enjoying it. The standout game amongst those 4 is COD4 MW. I'm loving the single player. I've had a look at playing online (through my 3 mobile broadband dongle! :)) and things are just too hectic. I'm 38 now and I think my reactions are going!

Initial thoughts on Bioshock is that it's going to be repetitive. Assassin's Creed is repetitive. I've played it for long enough already to find that out.

My dad is 58 in september and has 927 hours played on COD MW2 multiplayer since christmas 09. He only plays the hardcore modes and usually finishes the games doing very well for himself. He started off doing pretty awful as it was his first multiplayer game but now he has a very healthy kill:death ratio, even beating me on quite a few games and I'm 25 lol with supposedly faster reactions!

This does not work. Well not in my experience. I've felt the same in the past and got myself a PS3 and I even got Read Dead Redemption too. Less than an hour in I felt the same as I did when sat a PC attempting to complete Bioshock. The game was great but the moment....Well I just never got into it.

I don't believe age has anything to do with. Gaming sessions come and go with myself at 33 and I rarely find the time to complete a game these days, but like you I still splash out on the latest and greatest and even look forward to games, that most of the time I never even play.

I will add that one thing has inspired me back to games more recently and that's listening to gaming podcasts while I play. This probably wont be a good idea with online shooters, but it's amazing for games such as RCT or even portal

Roll on the next COD game :)

I'm 54 and I've been playing games since I got my Commodore 64 in 1983. So since then I've followed all trends and developments with interest, and spent endless amounts of hours on games, as much as my family and work allow. Computers only, no consoles.

But now I'm also getting bored and the last 18 months I've been reading more books than I have been in years. The reason is that I've now finally gotten bored because games have reached a stage that there is nothing new at all any more, it's all remakes in one form of another.

We went through a stage where gaming mechanics were improved for better gameplay from one iteration to the next, that I could accept and enjoy, but the last few years has only shown a cosmetic improvement reflecting graphics development, and that's just not enough.

With hardware development accellerating all the time, I don't find it acceptable that single-player game lengths are decreasing at an almost equal rate.

So I think I'm reaching my cut-off point right now. I don't think it's an age thing, it's a matter of getting bored of something once there's nothing really new left to discover.

As pretty much an all-genre player, and someone who often goes back to older games without being bothered by the dated graphics or gameplay mechanics, I doubt I'll ever get bored of gaming, at least not anytime soon...

Being 37, I can see where you are coming from with regards to reactions. In a straight shoot out my 11 year old will wipe the floor with me. I have to use tactics in order to beat him and luckily still can.

I prefer more story now although some 'pickup and play' games also get played quite a bit.

Recent and / or fav games.

Lost Planet 2
Stalker SoC / CS / CoP - the first two you really have to install the complete mod - google it, the last one I bought last night and hopefully will be playing when I get home. The first two need a bit to get in to but once you get out of the first sections and start to get some good weapons etc they just get better and better.
Dragonage / Mass effect / Mass effect 2 - More story and roleplay than shooting.
Need for Speed Shift - Fun racer with lovely effects.
X3 - Space trading game, need a bit of time to get going though.
Fallout 2 / 3 or tactics.
COD MW1&2 - If you liked 1 then you might well like 2. I did.
Mech warrior 3&4 with a Saitek throttle and stick is still one of my favourite games although I have no idea where I put the disc's :D.
Freespace 2 - Older space combat with large capital ships and small fighter / bombers. Seeing the bombers attacking the capitals with the flare from the torpedo's is just fantastic.
Battlezone 2 was also great (build a base then drive the vehicles) but alas it would not run on anything newer than Win 98 unless anyone else knows different ?.

Some of the older games may be available on Good Old Games for a few quid.

41 years old and been playing since the bat and ball came out so around 1976. No chance of stopping but my reactions ain't as good as they once were.

Mainly a PC gamer but i own an Xbox360, PS3 and a DSlite as well.

Interesting thread actually. I'm 36, I've been asking myself the same type of question. I must admit I don't find a lot of the games keep me as entertained as they would have done years ago.

It's like Mafia II, I got the demo, I like the look of it, but I can't see it holding my attention for all that long.

I've got GTA4, and that was very much the same - I didn't get all that far in it at all before I moved on to other things. I guess as you get older, you have different priorities in life, and perhaps, you can't spend as much time playing them. I much prefer realistic historical strategies now; particularly games that have enormous depth and realism, but don't get me wrong, a good blast it still fun, and I enjoy the Call of Duty games no end, but only in single player. The escapism is fantastic and so relaxing. Having said that, I do still enjoy pc gaming even if I can't keep up with it like I used to. I'm looking forward to Worms, even if it is short lived. :D

I'm 33 and still consider myself to be a good gamer, questioned my reaction speeds a while back but upon reflection realised I generally played games after 4-5 cans of beer so they probably weren't helping. Generally finish in the top two or three of any game I play when that stops happening I'll book in an appointment for the scrapheap :)

Early 40's here, and the main thing I find is that games annoy me very easily at this stage - you've seen so many cliche's and bad design decisions at this stage that when you see developers STILL doing the same thing after twenty years you just tend to drop the game immediately.

RPGs for example, the moment I come across a thief character who's a sassy female teen type, I just groan out loud (I'm looking at you, Bioware!)

I tend to agree with this, the best example for me is c&c and RTS in general. The genre hasnt moved on since then and (at least for me) star craft is a good example of this. I wont pay £45 for a game I played to death 15-20 years ago. Games like homeworld and total war got me back into RTS but they are in the minority.

These days if a game lacks atmosphere and a good story theres little to interest me.

have you tried hearts of iron 3?

It's pretty in depth ww2 strategy.

I've got that game, been through the tutorials, and I STILL don't know how to play it!

With regards to the subject, I am only 24, but I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated with gaming in general. I used to be able to spend hours and hours playing MOHAA online in my teens but now I struggle to even motivate myself to play half an hour of anything at the moment. I have loads of great games that I just haven't got round to playing that I picked up from Steam, such as ME and ME2, HOI3, Fallout 3, but I just seem to just get stuck at my desktop, stare at all the icons then decide that I'm going to check out OCUK turn my pc off and go and read!

I don't know what has changed as I used to love playing pc games, especially COD, MOHAA and CoH but just can't seem to get in the swing anymore. I don't think age has anything to do with it.
