am i insane? X99 > Ryzen

True but i think some are wondering maybe what platform is best to move to after x99, and i don't mean just for the sake of it.. like for noticeably better performance & future CPU upgrades.

Best to cross that bridge when it comes to replacing your system - the CPU landscape will probably be different by then.

If the consumer Intel socket is getting 6C CPUs next year it might mean Intel will have to rethink their current HEDT strategy.

Keep what you have till it's unbearingly slow then upgrade. Upgrade storage memory if that prolongs the life and GPU, as long as CPU is still good.

Chasing upgrades just because is pointless.

What resolution are you playing at on witcher 3, smogsy? You chasing high fps?
i play at 3440x1440 need about 20% extra fps to be able to max it at 60fps+ currently running 1080.

i know the CPU wont help at lot. but new toys an all... + i could change my EATX case to a MATX with a 95W TDP vs 140w..

I game at 4k pegged at 60fps vsync and don't go above 30% cpu total useage in witcher 3. That's with a 7700k @ 5.1 for reference.

well to be fair when i game i always have youtube running on my second screen among other things.

Makes no difference on my system. I sometimes have Netflix and sometimes youtube going.

Here is a screeny of useage while running youtube on my second screen.

If you've money to throw away then can I have it need to put deposit on a house thanks.

You probably don't need to upgrade tbh. With that said, sometimes people just get the itch to upgrade. If you switched quickly, you would probably get a decent price for your x99 parts.
Then you can switch to a AM4 platform that will have years worth of upgrade potential, without having to switch chipsets etc. I've thought about upgrading to X99, but didn't as it is at the end of it's lifecycle now, as well as the fact the CPU architecture is pretty old compared with the mainstream CPU's.

my current thoughts are
My Current Theory & Idea.
Sell
ASUS PG28AQ
ASUS PG278Q
Acer X34A
X99 setup (maybe)

Buy

1080p High Hz monitor with IPS
Maybe a Ryzen setup

With this i may even have cash to spare + a very high end rig for 1080p gaming.

Do you think this is a good plan, any thoughts/flaws/oversights so on?

Ye i just moved from a 1080p screen to 1440p, decent increase in detail and still good performance with my 980Ti, have seen around 30fps tho playing KF2 online when it gets hectic in custom servers.. but most of the time it's 100+fps. Wouldn't go much higher than 2560 x 1440 if playing much online or demanding games tbh, frame rates start to get sucky even if you have a good GPU.

if only for gaming, then I don't think it is worth it. although, for other application ie 3D rendering, more cores is always better.
