Am I the only person who doesnt care about fan noise?

At idle (i.e. during normal working or browsing) my system must be (perceptibly) silent. On an air cooled system this is dead easy to do, as you have PWM fans, motherboards that allow fans to be stopped under certain temperatures, semi-passive power supplies, and components that really don't output that much heat. Little more difficult on water purely as you have more fans and a pump.

Whilst gaming, silence isn't a must but I don't want it to be disruptive. Truth be told, my system can be a little loud to me as the graphics card fans spin up, however my environment is always extremely quiet no matter the time of day. It isn't too bad.

More annoying is the tonality of the noise rather than the amount of noise. Vibration, humming/droning and buzzing bother me far more than the sound of air moving around.

My motherboard wont allow the fans to drop below 700RPM so thats mostly why. Plus I added more fans so it has 2 x 140MM intakes, an AIO with original Corsair fan as exhaust and one of the original Fractal GP14 in the roof

When I get an new GPU I can finally remove the AIO and just have one 140MM exhaust

All fans are controlled by a Phanteks PWM controller and because the board doesnt allow them to spin any less than 700RPM I cant get the system silent until I get a new board and CPU with better fan control :(

CPU is an 8350 which doesnt help, GPU is a 290X

I use speedfan, board fan control has always been pathetic IMO and I can never get them set up how I want.

I thought of getting one of the massive passive cpu coolers but it would make a future move to matx impossible.

I am passive and mATX, some of the bigger air CPU coolers do a great job without fans, one of the dedicated passive CPU coolers isn't a must have.

I use a Heligon HE02, it's no bigger than a Dark Rock Pro 3 or similar heatsink.

I love the sound of my fans, gives off a nice hum which really helps with the tinitus.
I am the same with car tyres, I recently bought new tyres and hate the fact they are so quiet, I miss the noise! :(

Fan noise does bother me, especially if it's from the GPU. I was bothered by my MSI R9 290X, especially when it was OC'd.

The Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming I had was much better.

Lack of fan noise matter massively to me.

I really like the added depth my 5.1 surround system brings to games so my headphones rarely get used.

I'm not one of those people who expects or cares for a completely silent system, but for social reasons I use the computer in my living room. Even my partner can tell when I've switched out my GTX 980Ti (soon to be GTX 1080) for the Radeon R9 290 because it sounds like somebody left the hoover on when a game is fired up. And even on the desktop the extra noise is somewhat bothersome and noticeable even from across the room. ;)

i personally dont care about fan noise as like most i have headphones on most of the time and i have a separate room for the pc, but i have a m8 who does care about fan noise cos the only place he can have his pc is in the bedroom, and the pc noise annoys his mrs at night, so i can fully understand why some people care about noisy pc's.

Yes Define S as per sig.

I have case fans fitted but they don't run. They're set to come on in case something goes very wrong with the temps, during normal use and gaming they haven't fired up yet. They're Thermalright TY-147a x4.

Sorry I have sigs switched off, I might have a play around with Speedfan, do you know of any guides you can link to please?

It's natural that the old forum members care less about noise, as their hearing has deteriorated over the years. Put them back in their 20 or 30 year old body and I bet they'd get annoyed with fan noise!

PARDON ME! I CAN'T HEAR YOU I'M TOO OLD!

I don't have a headset and it sits on the desk and yes, I have quiet fans wherever possible as I can't bear noise (I'm also not deaf) :p

The only really noisy gpu I had was a 4870x2 I actually replaced the heatsink and fans on that as it was like an aircraft taking off at load, it was either that or roast bacon on the PC case.

There might be some links in this thread that might help, I did it the hard way and tried to figure it out myself

Which is what I usually do and spent a lot of time with Phobetria and my Bitfenix Recon on my old setup, I just dont have that kind of time these days to spend tweaking and monitoring hence why I went for the Phanteks hub

Thanks for the link anyway, I'll give it a read

Best setup for silent PC =

Fractal R4 / R5 with front HDD cage removed
Noctua Redux Intake fans
Be Quiet Exhaust fans
Noctua D15 CPU cooler

I don't think you can get any better than that without going watercooling.

Now we just need Noctua to make a range of GPU heatsinks/fans :)

I'd be all over that in a heartbeat!

I've got a FD5 case, Noctua D15 Cooler and the Noctua NF-F12 additional fan. Should be silent, but the HDD's spinning make all the noise.

I find them far more intrusive than any GPU fan. Sadly high capacity SSD's are so damn expensive (and almost non-existant thus far).

What about quiet AND small? I've just ordered a TJ08-E (matx), and a Noctua S12A 120mm to stick in it. If you under-volt the 180mm front fan it's supposed to be quiet enough.

Probably the loudest thing will be my Gelid Tranquillo CPU fan (not my best buy ever, cheaped out when I shouldn't have :p). In which case I'll swap it out for a nice Noctua U12S.
