Amazon Echo - anyone have one?

Apart from being a speaker, I don't get this..... does the novelty not wear off on stuff like this? Not to mention feeling like a tit when speaking to it.

.

I was listening to Radio 4 driving on the way home from work...Really interesting show about dying and then getting cryogenically frozen....

As I drove down the drive at home I really wanted to carry on listening to the show...

I didn't fancy sitting in my car...So I got out of my car walked in said Alexa light on...Alexa play radio 4 and within seconds I was listening to said show...

Now thats tech working for me right there!

No faffing with hifi, no selecting channels just slick!

Driving home listening to Audible in the car...streaming from my phone.

Gets into the drive, turns off the car, which incidentally kills the audiobook.

Get into the house.

"Alexa turn on hallway" - lights on.

"Alexa, play audio book"

It continues the book right where i left off.

What is this wizardry?!

Another thing i've noticed, I set the alarm this morning through Alexa, woke up with my bedroom light on....I swear I went to bed in the dark, either I talked in my sleep or the alarm function also turn on the lights just like those really expensive alarm lights you can get.

I've just got back from me Mum's, and my step Dad has just bought one of these. I'm impressed, so impressed I'm tempted to get the one I bought the Mrs out from under the tree. :D

The Amazon Music thing is a definite plus for me, beyond excellent in fact. However I'd really want to tie it in to the home cinema setup to get the best of it. My amp supports Airplay, which the Echo sadly doesn't... so it looks like I'll need to get the Bluetooth module for my amp to tie it together. Kind of wish I'd bought the Dot now instead, hardwired and saved the cash...

Any success stories tying into home cinema setups? Which route did people go down? What's the behaviour if the home cinema isn't on? Does it power it up, or revert to the internal speaker?

I've just got mine connected using a headphone cable to my amp. The sound isn't fantastic to be honest but it works.

EDIT - Ah, i assume the echo doesn't have a headphone out? That surprises me to be honest. The solution is simple. Stick a dot with your home cinema and put the echo elsewhere :)

See the Bluetooth adapter powers itself from the amp, whereas the Dot needs another plug. Plus, it seems a bit wasteful to put a Dot in the cupboard with the amp. :)

I'd rather have the Echo in the living room streaming to the amp.

Ordered a Dot, Echo, Fire Stick, Prime Sub and a Tado today as fancied replacing some manual iPhone docks we have an getting onboard with smartening up the house. Missed the deadline for delivery tomorrow though so will get it all Friday and configured at the weekend.

Time to see what the fuss is about.

Get some lights and smarthings...then your house will be like Star Trek.

Fire stick is for my son to replace his Chromecast as we are moving away from Plex to Prime. Will do some reading and have a look at a Roku thanks :)

As for lights, already looking at a Phillips Hue setup to replace my bulbs. I need to switch everything to LED anyway and the bulbs themselves aren't too bad on price. The £140 bridge will sting but at least its only a one off cost.

return the stick its underpowered and bad, get a roku instead, wish i had :(
roku also has far more apps.

Weird, I moved from the Roku v3 to Fire 4k, MUCH snappier, just as many apps + Amazon Prime videos (which I have sub), compatible with Kodi, has voice search, amazing piece of kit.

i assume you mean fire tv, in which case that isnt the stick and is probably far more powerful.
nowtv for a start isn't supported on the fire.
roku supports amazon video so not sure what you mean there.

I have a NowTV in my drawer, got it free. Just don't see the point as I also have Sky+. Not saying it isn't useful, just not for me.

When I ditched the Roku it didn't support Amazon Prime video, plus I found the interface on the Fire 4k much nicer too. The Roku interface is very dated.
