Amazon Echo - anyone have one?

Has the wemo skill been pulled? I went to enable it yesterday and it wasn't available. The Harmony support looked interesting till I noticed I need a hub, which kind of defeats the point for a dumb IRDA command.

You shouldn't need a separate 3rd party skill for Wemo, it's part of the standard smarthome stuff on Alexa now.

Say "Alexa, discover devices".

Siri is permanently off on my iphone, complete waste of apples time but they had the money to throw at it then let 15 million people beta test it :)

When listening to some music, I use it as a hands-free device to change artist, playlist, shuffle my library... I guess you just need to have a use case for it that fits you.

New use for Amazon Echo Dot... Feeding my 1 year old a yoghurt. He prefers eating whilst listening to music because it seems to distract him. He's not eating. We're both covered in yoghurt.

"Alexa, play some Christmas music"

*Music plays*

*Fred starts eating (and dancing)*

WIN! :D

Alexa, can you rap? :p

Alexa, Never gonna give you up (sing)

Alexa, Up up down down left right left right B A Start

Alexa, What's the first rule of fight club?

Call me paranoid but I simply don't trust an always-on microphone appliance and wouldn't have one in my home.

Want it in 1 word?

Laziness.

I am too lazy to get out of the sofa to turn off the light int he ceiling but leaving the light behind the TV on to watch a movie....too lazy to pick up my phone to use an app, too lazy unlock it and slide the bar to dim down the lights.

I am too lazy to google the weather, i just ask.

Or it's just cool to show off to friends when to come round.

Nah its so amazon can get into your homes, get more metrics and convince you its the best thing since sliced bread.

Basically is dodgy as **** or am i on too much x-files, but having 4 tech giants control pretty much everything is getting a bit hmmmmmmmm oh and all American who are not paranoid delusional idiots.

All that... Or, it's just a nice fun bit of tech?

I have an iMac with a front facing camera that is constantly plugged in and on standby.
I have a Kinect on my Xbox 1, also plugged in.
I have a Wii U which has a camera too I think, same.
I have one of those phones which you can talk hands free.
I have home security cams.

I've bugged myself enough, one more wouldn't hurt.

Neither.....

Amazon are solely in the game of selling you crap you do not really need. Give it 6 months and it will be Order X stuff and done.

I like the idea of the voice thing, i really do. But I do not like the idea of it connected to (INSERT TECH COMPANY HERE) and whatever the TECH company decides it want to use as it source information.... I.e the highest bidder.

(Give it 16 months, it will be a subscription service to bypass the adverts)

And?

They know what I buy from my shopping loyalty cards to bank transactions to amazon shopping list going back to 1999. There is cookies on my phone, computer on top of that. I'm way past caring tbh.

Hi all,

I noticed they're launching new models and a cheaper version (that requires a separate speaker). Does anyone have one? Where do you tend to keep it and what do you tend to use it for? How is the speaker for playing music?

I'm tempted to put it in the kitchen for listening to music, asking questions, etc but at £100 I'm wondering if I'm better just sticking with some bluetooth speakers and switching on voice activated Siri following iOS 10 integration with non-Apple apps. Don't really fancy the battery drain though...

The cheaper one might be better but having a separate speaker constantly on seems like a waste of power and use of two sockets.

Thanks

Well you're unlikely to get much sense out of Siri as it's the worst of the bunch. Google Now or the new Google Assistant maybe.

Why are you trying to convince the rest of us?

you really are a bore. Can't you just leave and go somewhere else instead of posting this usual inane rubbish?

your input isn't welcomed here, not any more.

Awww need a hug ?

Still not convinced by any of it, and no valid argument to try it out.

Want a valid argument to try it out?

How do you define valid?

Is the price not low enough for you? I spent more on a meal before

Is the size too big for you?

Is the fact that it can be powered off a USB port too difficult for you?

Is the function of controlling my appliances and lights by voice alone not geeky enough for you?

A new computer game costs £45, £45 to give this a go is very reasonable.

If you are still seeking valid reasons then I suggest you look at yourselves and not others since no one is asking you to buy them one, we are spending our own money for our own homes.
