Amazon making some items prime only purchases

I'm as cynical as they come but Prime is good value for money (especially as I got it on offer with twenty quid off) and Amazon's customer service is generally very good.

On topic, Prime is obviously good for Amazon as I'm sure Prime customers purchase far more than non-Prime customers, so they want to get as many people into Prime as possible. If it was a cack service I'd have more sympathy towards the idea that it was a shady business practice.

there are plenty of better alternatives if you shop for specifics.

I dont shop for specifics. I just buy random items, lucky dips and things like that. Websites that let you add items to the basket by stock code are great - I use my random number generator and end up with loads of cool (but essentially useless) items :D

Used to have prime when it was without video at £50 a year. It would be better if you could get it without the video, as I have no use for it.

You are in the minority I'm sure. Amazon is fantastic, £80 is a small price to pay for the streaming service, family discount and next day delivery.

The content is poor on Amazon Prime. For someone who doesn't order much Amazon £80 a year isn't worth it. It all depends on peoples circumstances.

Totally worth it for me and the family.

Prime delivery is invaluable for next day delivery stuff, even things like dog food can be cheaper than ASDA so with free delivery next day why not!

Can understand it where they've done it with some TV shows i.e. there are some shows that "wouldn't be economical" for them otherwise where you still have to pay per episode but the show is only available if you are a prime member and/or special deals where prime members can get discounts on stuff that is still otherwise available to non-prime members.

With stuff in general though I don't see the sense in it.

Best customer service i've experienced. Something doesn't turn up next day, no problem, no waiting to see if it comes, they send another one straight out (and more often than not throw in a free extra month of prime).

Amazon is a million times better (safer??) to use than ebay.

+1

Indeed. I wasn't too impressed by what's on offer on the video side of things when I trialled it and I personally don't order often from Amazon so Prime isn't worth it for me.

If you could pay monthly I'd be more inclined as I wouldn't be committed, and could stick a month on if I decided I wanted to watch a few things they had or if I had a few things to order that month. where paying 6 or 7 quid for a month would be cheaper than 3 or 4 lots of delivery.

I suppose they don't offer monthly subs for that reason.

£79 gets you basically -

-Next day delivery on loads of things (even silly stuff like toilet rolls/kitchen paper etc)
-Good TV/Movies streaming
-Free Unlimited photo storage upload
-Amazon Music (not as good as spotify/deezer etc but still free)
-Promotional credit if you don't do next day delivery (this was great last year around Christmas as I made about £45 in credit for slower delivery
-Kindle Owners' Lending Library gives members within the UK access to borrow one book per month at no additional cost

Exactly this.

I probably order 20 times or so over the course of a year, am very rarely in a rush to get the items and my internet isn't good enough for the video content.

Free next day delivery alone has probably saved me the cost of Prime membership since Christmas.

I use prime mainly for the delivery benefits. I sometimes place orders after 6PM for delivery the next morning even on Sundays. I get things delivered to the Amazon locker at my local Co-Op so I don't even need to stay in.

Amazon Prime does get a bit boring after a while as I feel the content is not updated as often as it really should be.
