Is it just me, or are the rainforest trying every dirty trick in the book to get you to sign up for their prime service?? Surely there should be some law preventing what they are doing? Really not impressed.

A law against business making money... good luck with that one.

Yes. They kidnapped my cat and said I could only have it back the next day if I signed up.

I know they are offering the fire sticks with a £12 refund if you sign up for prime until May time when the refunds are given out. Making the Stick 7 quid.

But if you don't want prime you do have a couple of choices,

1) Pay full price for fire stick.

2) Don't buy fire stick.

3) something something letterbox.

So I am all alone in thinking what they are doing is pushy, aggressive and underhand?

I know several people who have been suckered into paying the £75 subscription without meaning to.

You haven't actually said what you think is underhand and pushy about their practices OP?

If it's related to the Fire TV Stick promo then it's hardly pushy..they're offering people a good discount on a product for signing up for something which will benefit them. Nobody is forcing people to sign up to get the discount and £35 is a good RRP for a product of this kind.

I like to think I'm pretty computer literate, yet I ended up signing up for the free trial without actually wanting to. Fortunatley I realised so I gave it a go, decided I didn't want it and cancelled it before they charged me any money. However a relative of mine who isn't so savvy didn't realise an ended up paying the £80 and is trying to get the money back (like getting blood out of a stone I think). So agree with the OP, Amazon are being extremely sneaky here.

what exactly are they doing that is underhand ?

It's more a case of what they aren't doing. They aren't asking you to confirm that you really want to sign up to the free trial. They aren't highlighting that at the end of the free trial you'll be automatically charged for a year's subscription.

yes they are, its very clear to me they take your card details and charge you after the trial runs out

Finally someone agrees with me :p

I used to have Prime but decided to drop it after they put the price up (as I don't have any desire to use their streaming service). Shock horror I just went in to the website and told it not to auto-renew and when it came time for renewal unsurprisingly it didn't.

There is nothing underhand about it. Yes they have promotions where if you take it out then you can get a discount on a product ... which is not a concept which is limited to them or new. And as for people getting charged because they have let the free trial run out without cancelling ... well that's their own fault! Oh, and their Prime help pages are pretty clear on that it will automatically go to a paid subscription at the end of the trial and what to do to prevent it.

I had Prime when it was £50. I've not renewed since it went to £79. Simples. People need to take responsibility for their actions. Amazon is a reputable company but like any other large company will target customers with promotions.

Amazon were great when I signed up for Prime as I was ordering lots of little bits over a few weeks and forgot to cancel it (slipped by a day). Quick webchat and the money was refunded instantly. Now they have a tickbox to stop the auto renew which is even easier to use.
