hello all

My monitor is 'nvidia 3d vision ready'. I don't use 3D right now but do want to try it in the near future when I get a new graphics card.

I need to know though...are AMD GPU's compatiable with monitors that use 3d vision? I don't quite understand the technicalities and if it's just marketing or whatever. Hope it doesn't mean i'm forced to go nvidia.

The terms of NVIDIA's 3DVision ecosystem specifically blocks AMD graphics cards from working with these monitors. The protection is baked into the EDID of the display; 3D capabilities will not be exposed to a Radeon graphics card.

So you're saying Tridef won't work?

I assumed something liek this...thanks for clearing that up.

Beginning to dislike Nvidia but looks like i'm stuck with them and their monopoly. must research more in future :o

haha ok..can you elaborate on what you mean by rubbish though? It's just most of what i've read has been positive, only for single player/casual of course.

I went the AMD route for 3D with a samsung monitor. Initially used tridef but more games seem to support AMD 3D natively now. However, I have to admit I hardly ever use 3D but I do like 120 Hz

so what the deal with 'lightboost' then. I take it there's no 'hack' or whatever to get it to work with an amd card? why does it feel like amd are behind in the 3d area

You have to do stupid things like turn shadows off or turn this off turn that off. Everything is all over the place.

The only time I've enjoyed using my 3dvision kit was when I watched avengers in 3d with it.

As Thracks said, it's not AMD being behind, it's nVidia being nVidia by locking things to their own hardware.

They do it with whatever they think they can get away with, they've even tried to do it with basic rudimentary anti-aliasing before.

I am a massive fan of 3D and certain games just look stunning. Tomb Raider, Trine 1+2, Dirt 3, Alan Wake, Dishonoured, Hitman Absolution, Portal 2, to name but a few look and play great.

When the consumer Oculus Rift releases, will you continue to use 3D on your monitors?

I wouldn't mind having a play with the Oculus Rift prior to deciding. It would be good to go single screen and use the rift for 3D. What is support like for it? I have done a little reading up and only 2 games or have I misread something?

That's official Oculus Rift support, which is all features, head tracking and so on.

There is however software that allows any games to work with it just for the VR/3D part, which will be the same as what you'd get on 3D monitors.

I wanted to invest in 3D monitors, but didn't want to drop from 2560x1440, so the Rift is the perfect solution for me.

I'll still stay with 3 monitors as well though, as I use 3 for desktop use much more than I do for games.

Ahh ok. I wouldn't mind jumping on a 4K monitor at some stage (when they are in my price range) and this would leave the Rift for 3D gaming.

I look forward to the day of cheap 27-30" Korean 4K displays, as I will be all over 3 of them. 2560x1440 is very nice, but still comparatively low resolution in pixel density, even 4K is, just not as much.

I found 3d better in some games than others, call of duty was cack but tomb raider and bulletstorm were great to play in 3d

There'll be a correlation between cack games, and the niche support they offer.

Activision seem to think widescreen displays are niche, so no surprise there that their 3D support is lacking too.
