Currenty have the following:

Gigabyte M51GM-S2G
AMD 3800+ single core
4GB Corsair RAM
74GB Seagate Raptor Hard Drive
EVGA 7900 GTX 512mb

I would like to upgrade the CPU, so would I be better to buy a AMD 6000+ Dual Core for my current motherboard for £136 exVAT or buy a Intel E6600 Dual Core with a Foxconn G9657MA-8EKRS2H iG965 motherboard for £198 exVAT.

Thanks,
Alastair.

that AMD cpu is for AM2 motherboards.. which yours isnt. so you cannot upgrade to that cpu without a motherboard change.

so, if your going to have to change the mbrd, the intel would be the better otpion..

In which case, the Athlon may be the better bet as it's a cheaper all round upgrade. Plus you get the benefit that changing a CPU is a lot easier than replacing the entire board. And you won't have to re-install Windows. You have checked to make sure that the motherboard supports the 6000+ haven't you?

Just had a quick check on gigabyte's website (I hadn't even thought to check  ) and I would have to update my Bios version but yes will support the 6000+

On a pure assumption that you wouldn't be overclocking I would say save your money and just get the 6000+. It isn't exactly slow by any means and it should be roughly similar in performance to the stock E6600 anyway.

If however you want to overclock then the C2D setup is the way to go (although you may need a better MB) as from the reviews I have read the 6000+ is basically at the limit of the K8 architecture with most reviewers managing only a 200mhz overclock.

Prob not going to overclock as I only have a passable knowledge of PC's and would not trust myself not to do something horrific (at which point I'd probably just cry). Think I'll plump for the 6000+, as it seems to most obvious upgrade route and I'm all for an easy life :)

e6600, definitely.

Cooler, cheaper, faster, better overclocking potential. Win, win, win, win.

edit - at £165 for the 6000+ it's a bit more difficult to say. Not sure why but I had in my mind that the 6000+ was going for ~£300. If you're not going to be overclocking, and you already have a compatible motherboard... I'll change my mind and say stick with the A64 for now.

If you are going to be running stock speeds then the 6000+ will be faster and a much better choice.

However, overclocking the e6600 to 3+ghz is childs play and will destroy the 6000+ when clocked even at 3.0 ghz.

if running at stock the 6000+ its much better and isnt that slow
you wont have to buy a new mobo either

E6600.

It will overclock like a mofo with 2Gb PC6400 and a 965 board!

Hell get a E6420 and overclock it! 3.2ghz out of the bag and nail any AMD out atm (even overclocked)!

:D :D

I wish people would read the whole original post and some of the thread before commenting... happens all the time.

Why would he want 2 gig of PC6400 when he already has 4gig of DDR2 ram?
He also has said he would rather not overclock....

Bah!

Putting 400FSB, 1.4V, 1:1, 4-4-4-12 2.2V, 8x multi takes about 5 mins, max to setup, or if you wanna be extra lazy, 7x!

Easy peasy really and makes the system worth while, is there a decent reason not to!?

id go with the 6000+ only thing tho is i Recommend getting an better cooler for it as it is rated 125w Thermale (thats when the CPU is maxed out both cores) Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro its £18 and it cools very well and is very quite or the Mini typoon for £23 but i think the Arctic 64 pro is better one as i have used it in the past and it cools very well (it states it can cool upto 200W so up to you)

for an new pc i recommend the e6600 but if you got the parts all ready all it is an swap out an get an Big performace boost going from what you got now (update the BIOS {F11 is the one you want to install for that motherboard} Before you put the CPU in or the pc mite not Post and probly best setting bios defualts before fitting the new one on)

i going to be selling my 3800 X2 and getting an 6000+ X2 my self (only cost me £100 after takeing the price off the 3800 X2 sold)so be nice to see how you do with it may have it before you tho
