AMD 7nm GPU News and Rumours 2018/2019

I hope they just stuff as many stream processors as possible onto the 7nm card and have it use just as much power as vega 64 by clocking it high. I'm not that fussed about power consumption to a certain degree.

To really put this in prospective if a Vega64 could do 1900Mhz as a stock clock how well would it perform in today's games?
Around Gtx1080ti at 2ghz. Basically it could beat all good 1080tis as if you leave them at low noise (60% fan speed for the Aorus Xtreme for example) they operate around 1950.
Atm with the low power settings posted here we beat gtx1080 @ 2190 by 5%

You'd need more like 2.2GHz to match a 1080ti over a broad range of titles - you don't always get 1:1 performance increase from clock rates and often it trails off a bit towards the more extreme clocks due to architecture inefficiencies, etc.

EDIT: Ideally you'd take a leaf out of nVidia's book though in terms of approach to setup engines and how stuff is fed so as to better facilitate high clock rates and taking advantage of high clock rates - there is little in gaming today that takes advantage of a fatter, slower pipeline even though it works well for compute stuff (and occasionally gives Vega a huge lead in specific compute stuff).

GCN has a hard limitation of 4096 SP's I've read and a lot of Fuji/Vega die space and design was just to get higher clocks due to this.

Here is something to ponder on to my Vega 64 at 1900Mhz stock clock. Take a look at what it's doing now as driver's are maturing, finally.

In the video above you clearly see Vega 64 reaching just over 1600Mhz. Yet, is very competitive and can give the 2070 a run for it's price to performance ratio. It's not hard to believe it would look attractive vs RTX if a Vega 64 Refresh (7nm) was able to maintain 1900MHz at just base clock. Probably won't do no more then 2100Mhz boost IMO.

This is true, along with 4 shader engines with 1 geometry processor each. Hence Vega didn't expand upon Fiji.

But even if AMD didbincreadi core count GCN is just not scaling well. It needs a completely new front end.

We are seeing some really aggressive pricing on Vega56 right now.

I am only expecting a 12% jump for the RX590/680/690 but the pricing on Vega is making me wonder if there is enough juice in the upgrade to get it close to Vega56 territory... but that would mean nearly 40% improvement... so I am probably dreaming.

If existence of RX 590 rumours are true will be 10% faster than RX 580 roughly, so 12% is not unrealistic.

AMD need to change the Radeon name for when they release their next gen GPUs. It's toxic and i know many that won't go near them. The video below denotes the Radeon brand for them.

That's like saying any hairdryer cooler nvidia have had in the past (and there were a few) denotes the geforce brand for them.

I'm looking to upgrade from my current RX 480 (4GB), want more VRAM and more grunt now to match up better with my 2700X but stay with an AMD GPU.

Question is, do i wait for the rumoured 590/680 whatever or pull the trigger on that Powercolor Vega 56 thats going for £350?

Or just sit back and wait for Navi?

Problem is, i like to stick with Sapphire GPU's as they're always a solid card in my own experience.

Yeah. He keeps saying this, but it makes no sense. Changing the name won’t do nothing but crate confusion. What they need is to consistently beat nvidia for 4-5 generations to change people’s minds on what is best.

If they are going to change name it needs to be done with a bang where they release a card like the 9700 back in the day which spanked Nvidia at the time. Changing name and offering similar performance like now will make things worse...

How long can you wait for? Keep in mind it's looking like first Navi cards towards the end of 2019 will be Navi 64 equivalents but at lower prices. Also, whether it will be delayed and how much it will actually cost, is still up in the air. So if it happened that it wouldn't be here until Jan/Feb 2020, how much would that bother you?

We're in similar situations (RX480 but 8gb), so I'll tell you what I would do: Buy vega 56. Simply unbelievable price right now, and if you flog the games then you can reduce it to £300. I just don't see anything else even approaching that any time soon.

Was probably looking at around the middle of next year for waiting. Also someone mentioned Black Friday coming up but those prices are never really that good, at least here in the UK.

Didnt somebody say we cant resell these games? I'm not 100% sure i could.

Yeah, I'd buy the V56 that are going for £350 as well. That's a Powercolor one if I remember rightly; I've had pretty good experiences with them thus far.

You sure can, people have been selling them since the beginning, even on this forum. Middle of next year is definitely too early, and yeah, I don't hold my breath for BF deals either.
