AMD announce EPYC

There are some Threadripper benchmarks on Geekbench - assuming they're legit, the results don't bode well. In multi-threaded performance, the 16 core 1950X is only about 20% faster than the 6 core Xeon in my current system;

Perhaps this is a result of Geekbench failing to properly utilise so many cores? The single core result is pretty encouraging, given that it's pretty much the same as the Xeon at 3.6GHz with a 200MHz clock speed deficit.

The multicore benchmark is lower than a 1800x. I think an accurate deduction is that it is not representative of the final product and there is some serious issues with the software. The reason i say it is the software is because of the Blender demo they showed, where they had improved multi-core performance over the 1800x.

Then your boss is an idiot and will lose his job to someone who has better business acumen.

He is a company partner who has a 10% stake in a £100 million turn over business for 25 years. I think hes pretty safe and certainly not an idiot. He just doesn't do technology and relies on others in the end to advice on what he does not know.

Further to that, just because he thinks the name is childish I did not say that it wasn't understood in the end. However it does make it a harder sell. Giving him model numbers and saying this preforms by X% better in these programs which means Y man hours saved is all he wants to know in the end.

So all you need to do is wait till they release model numbers? Nobody calls it the AMD Ryzen 7 1700x.

Yeah I think the point that giving something a name that has Thread Ripper lazer etched into it and the paperwork with it stating it was more the point at the time. When initially discussing it, we as employers still had to go to the boss and say "in 3 months we would like £40k for new machines which will house the latest AMD Threadripper CPUs"

It was a point about passing comment on how a name sounds to people who are not in the tech industry or enthusiasts. To them it is daft and doesn't sound business like. We can't just wait for model numbers because that sort of money needs approving by more than one partner and takes time. But yes when model numbers come out we can then put a detailed purchase order together with specs using said model number/names and thus Threadripper wont be seen other than on the invoice.

Ah right. Good point.

Pass it off as a printing error:D

Geekbench is notoriously bad on AMD CPUS, then again it says the new Apple A10 processor is better than Kaby Lake 2-4 Cores as well.

It'll probably need another update to correctly benchmark the new architectures and cores.

Fair enough :)

Just call them the latest AMD Zen server CPU's which has comparable performance to tje equivalent Intel models for a fraction of the cost.

Dell has just announced EYPC versions of the "worlds" best selling servers. They are offering 24 NVME from one CPUs

Also, it looks like amazon has ordered some of these

The Solutions Architect will be required to support key datacenter customers within the region with focus on Amazon and Microsoft. The primary focus of the Solutions Architect will be to:

I wonder if EPYC will be locked or overclockable... another good way to differentiate themselves from Intel
Would it take more effort to lock it than to leave it unlocked? Considering that everything else is unlocked, I wouldn't be surprised if they just left it unlocked, if it takes less effort.

For those that were't aware Anand Tech is doing a liveblog of Epyc Release

LOL Intel:

We take all competitors seriously, and while AMD is trying to re-enter the server market segment, Intel continues to deliver 20+ years of uninterrupted data center innovations while maintaining broad ecosystem investments. Our Xeon CPU architecture is proven and battle tested, delivering outstanding performance on a wide range of workloads and specifically designed to maximize data center performance, capabilities, reliability, and manageability. With our next-generation Xeon Scalable processors, we expect to continue offering the highest core and system performance versus AMD. AMD’s approach of stitching together 4 desktop die in a processor is expected to lead to inconsistent performance and other deployment complexities in the data center.
