AMD ATi Pulled a fast one HD 3800... ?

so it has come to this then, the numbers game, increase the cards model number = charge more cash for the same thing with a different sticker on it.

guess desperate times call for desperate measures.

I'd watch what your saying as you may well eat 5 month's worth of words if this turns out to be true :p

that would be stupid so my hd2900xt will be faster hd3800 thats stupid and it not will be like that dam it is r700 and its coming out january

Its not such a bad idea to change to 3800 because of the bad reputation the 2900 has. If these new cards come with the performance to back up the new name and without all the things that were wrong with the 2900s then its a pretty good move as people won't be going around saying bad things about 3800s but will still be saying 2900s were bad.

They wont come with the performance to back it up though, these are just the 2900's again, but on a smaller 55nm process and with Dx10.1, if you already have a 2900 XT or a pro, then theres no point at all getting shot of them for another one.

OK but say R700 is also DX10.1, it comes out Janary and they call it HD3900. We have a consistent naming scheme, where *800 is the mid range part that performs on par with the previous high end and *900 is the high end. Who says the high end needs to launch first? It's the volume sales that make the money.

I liked it when everything ATi did was vanilla or Pro. Bring back simple, consistent naming schemes!

id love to eat my words, but i got a sneeky suspicion that its never gonna happen. nasdaq shows amd's stock prices on the stedy decline. can;t see anything happening now.

Funny how this thread shows how much we actually believe the rumours that get thrown around in the GPU market. We all seem to 'know' that RV670 has a 256bit bus, that R700 is coming out in January. It ain't the gospel y'know!

r700 is not due till 6 months after g90. its standard protocol from ati to be late to the party.

then your brain is wrong you probably using only 9 % as i and normal humans using 10% nothing wrong to deliver early blow and finish nvidia for good

edit: and i seen as well that ati releasing some card maybe dual chipped card that promises to deliver 20 000 3dmark06 WooTTTT

Oh yeah forgot about that, these new 2900's have a smaller bus than the ones now, 256bit, so all your getting is either another 2900 XT/2900 pro on a 55nm process, worthless Dx10.1 added, and you get your bus cut to 256bit. :D

...and finish nvidia for good

Erm... Yes. Did A64 finish Intel? Did R300 finish nVIDIA? These are big companies and they can take a battering. 3DFX showed it can happen but I can't see them going under any time soon. Plus do you really want a one horse GPU race?

not really but intel is geting ready to make gpu

and if they team up with intel or something then nvidia will be big but i guess this will not happen and intel will compete with amd/ati and nvidia will take all the battering and die rofl

I couldn't imagine a worse world where your only choice of graphics card was one from Intel..................:(
