AMD Bulldozer Finally!

I am waiting for the second gen BD before i consider upgrade although the first gen is turning into a bit of a fiasco from amd's pov.

I think that is a little harsh. AMD havn't really fixed any dates they have just been a bit wobberly. I think that 99.9% of the world doesn't even know about the delay. Sure they will ahave lost the business of a few gamers who got bored and bought Intels but in the grand scheme of things I doubt it will be a big deal. It only seems like a complete mess because most of us are checking of updates on an hourly basis.

I can't see how?......

Daft speculation/fakes from everywhere bar AMD across a few enthusiast sites, none of which have concrete sources...

For all we know - everything is going exactly to plan from AMD's pov.

PC Gamer reports that a leaked processor road map from AMD reveals that the company is working on a desktop CPU with a whopping 10 processor cores inside.

The roadmap, which first appeared on a Chinese news web site, shows that the 10 core CPU has the rather appropriate code name "Piledriver". It's designed to be a variation on AMD's previously announced "Bulldozer" CPU which is scheduled to launch with eight processor cores later this year. The Piledriver CPU will also use a new motherboard design called the FM2. The article adds that the roadmap also includes the Trinity CPU/GPU hybrid which is also supposed to use the same design as the Piledriver CPU along with the FM2 motherboard.

Loving AMD for naming their CPU's like autobots. 8 core, Bulldozer, 10 core, Piledriver... you wait, 12 core... Devastator! Then of course the 16 core FORTRESS MAXIMUS edition will emerge!

Couldn't wait any longer, and went the Sandybridge route. Obviously it's a big improvement from the Athlon X2 6400+ and 8800GT I was running, so I am pretty chuffed. I've always had a soft spot for AMD though, so depending on the performance when BD comes out, I may give this build to the mrs and build an AMD machine for myself.

soooo i dont understand, Piledriver is going to be FM2, and Bulldozer AM3+ (at least 1° gen), so Piledriver is going to be the next Bulldozer, or those 2 are different kind of CPU ? (i mean we could see them going together for 2 different constumers ?)

If its FM2 it means its an APU. As far as i remember Komodo is the one replacing Bulldozer.

AM3+ will probably stay until DDR4 arrives.

Komodo is a platform, not a CPU architecture. FM2 is the high-end 'replacement' for AM3+ ... the AM2+/AM3/AM3+ family has been around forever. I'm sure there were some drawbacks in terms of performance to keeping it for Bulldozer, but it was understandable that they wanted to keep commonality for the first gen.

Piledriver / Komodo are expected in H1 '12 ... most likely mid Q2. Bulldozer isn't going to be top dog for long at all. Don't think there's going to be an integrated GPU in Piledriver .... just in Krishna.

FM2 might be a specific socket but its looking increasingly like a new platform as supposedly midrange and low end chips are on it, though the recently leaked roadmap, no idea where it comes from so could be completely fake. It does suggest the high end platform is moving to FM2, but theres just, well, almost no chance it will have the same socket as a Trinity(llano replacement with Bulldozer cpu cores) as its an APU and very different, if they upgraded the whole platform to be pin compatible though, from what dual core trinitys with gpu on to 10 core Komodo's and everything inbetween.

Mobo manufacturers would certainly welcome it, essentially one range of mobo's rather than an entire range for several different chip types.

that would be BEATIFUL, but i have a question... does AMD (like with the old Phenom II x2) arent aware of unlockable cores or do they do it that way intentionally ?

Thats a very good question, 99% of the world either won't know, won't care, won't risk it or won't have a mobo that will enable the option. So its it purely to gain more sales in the enthusiast sector? I know that while enthusiasts aren't a huge demographic on their own, they effect a lot more sales. Half the people I know ask me what to buy when they want a new computer, so if I'm happy with AMD in terms of performance, value, or both, then that bodes well for what advice I'd pass on.

Most people know a "computer guy" who they will often ask what to buy for their next computer. Either way, I like it, currently have a Dual core phenom working as a quad core at 4Ghz, for the grand total for £60. The Q6600 was the last chip with as good value, but pretty much the x555(or a couple others) are basically the best value chip ever made. Despite being slower plenty of enthusiasts choose to give up on completely top end performance when you're talking about, at the time £70 mobo and £60 chip, vs Intel side, £180+ for a decent Intel quad core(an i7 something or other) and a £100 mobo.

Martini, see few pages back for a link to ASRock website. They clearly say what will be the difference between their mobos.

Im starting to get anxious about getting something new... like now ;) so if would be great to see if the release date is postponed...
