AMD Bulldozer Finally!

Here are some more details about the overclocking event:

http://www.overclockers.com/amd-fx-bulldozer-breaks-cpu-frequency-world-record/

It seems many CPUs hit 8GHZ.

Not surprising, you might recall I said a month or two ago that I said BD could be the benchers CPU of choice, as SB has an artificial limit on its OC.

I expect BD to come out next month, and would be very surprised if it doesn't.

It seems they mentioned air coolers too. So I suspect existing coolers for the Phenom II X6 should be fine.

I'd expect 4.8GHZ to be fairly easy for 24/7.
Which *should* put it in-line with a 4GHZ SB.

I'd take supposed 24/7 overclocks with a pinch of salt, deneb didn't reach 4GHZ 24/7 until C3, despite AMD banging on how 4GHZ was now a reality.

Look at the cores ;)? Would get smashed by a 4GHZ SB 2500k in app's that can use 4 threads, that's also not 24/7.

Over on Anandtech with an Antec KÜHLER water cooler,an FX8150 was overclocked to 4.8GHZ and with phase change cooling at 1.632V, around 5.9GHZ was achieved.

It will be interesting to see how far the 4 core and 6 core versions overclock. I wonder if the FX4120 will be priced on the lower end of the Core i5 price spectrum??

If it can overclock well, then it means at least for overclockers you will be looking at an FX4120 or a more expensive Core i5 2500K.

It's going to be interesting the actual prices these hit at in UK. Normally we see etailors ramping the price very high on release as they know people will pay the prices due to demand. We have seen this in the past a lot. I wonder if this happens again.

I can't see Bulldozer not being successful. I think it will be priced as always lower than Intel, and it will be on par performance wise maybe a little lower. It has better bang per buck going for it potentially, overclockability, more cores, newer tech and for enthusiasts the feeling of showing support to the underdog and competing with the monopoly of Intel.

The real interesting thing is going to be if Bulldozer turns out to perform BETTER than Intel. This is such a key thing. Even if Bulldozer is only a few percent better consistently in benchmarks, this is a big psychological thing, as there would be no reason to buy Intel since AMD would almost certainly be better on price.
AMD could reclaim a vast amount of market share with Bulldozer if it is good. Intel would push on with their new tech no doubt and probably drop prices a little. They can afford to, plus there will always be people that simply buy Intel out of choice, which is also fine. You pay your money...

Like I said, 4.8GHZ easy to achieve lol.

Ha, this is kinda funny for me. Back when I first got into building my own PCs Intel held the clockspeed crown with some liquid nitrogen nutters pushing Pentium 4s to 4GHz+, but AMD's Athlon XPs were outperforming P4s at much lower frequencies. How times have changed eh? :p

I don't think these will be able to beat SB even when overclocked, cause let's face it, SB also runs cool and clocks well. Not that it matters, as they will definitely make a killing in the server market. What AMD needs is not the performance crown, it's to sort out their manufacturing capacity problems! It was a stupid mistake spinning out GF, you can be a fabless chipmaker if you're ARM, cause then you're not actually selling chips yourself, you're just lisencing yoru design - but if you're actually in the chip-selling business, and you're a high-end CPU maker and only 1-2 fabs worldwide actually have the capability to manufacture your chips, then you're basically at their mercy, which is awful!
