AMD Bulldozer Finally!

Ignoring the game for now.
The handbrake is pretty pants. It's always been good on AMD CPU's. 100% more cores and less than 25% faster performance? Stellar :D

I suspect the CPUs compared were the 3.1GHZ FX8120 and 3.3GHZ Core i5 2500K as these should be closer in price. The article states the comparison is between similarly priced parts.

The following results are ones I tabulated on another forum.

At stock speeds in the latest version of HandBrake a Core i5 is not that far behind a Phenom II X6 at the same clockspeed.

Yeah, it's possible that the shared cache for each module wasn't enough to keep both cores fed. Or that the central scheduling needs more optimizing. But no doubt this is why AMD started using the word "modules" rather than "cores". It's not just technically accurate, it's a marketing ploy to get people to think of Bulldozer in comparison to Intel quad-cores rather than some theoretical future octa-core.

EDIT: Also remember every 2 cores share an FPU, that probably gets used a lot when encoding (not that I'm a programmer, I'm only presuming).

This chap has seen Bulldozer in action and says it holds up well against the Core i7 980X.
What the person said below made me chuckle, but i'd rather spend the savings on an extra gpu.

What was said, haha!
IF I was building a gaming machine I would use the FX8150 and not think twice about it, and buy the family's food for the month with the savings!

But which would give the better performance in pc gaming...

Top end amd single graphics card with top end intel cpu.....?

or, phenom 2 x4 with sli gtx 580's....?

What I'm really interested in comparing is one Intel core vs one AMD "Module" and the price/performance ratio.

To me it seems one AMD module (with two cores) = one Intel Hyperthreading core in terms of pricing.

So, if a top model four module bulldozer is priced the same or less than a top model four core Intel with hyperthreading but out performs it, then it's on the right track for how most use their PC's going into the future.

What's worrying is if the single thread performance and performance/watt ratio is worse...might just swing it Intel's way. All depends on the price.

I just re-read the Anandtech article. Supposedly,AMD hinted that Trinity will be launched within the next few months!! Does this mean AMD Piledriver will be out early next year too??

This sounds like what Nvidia did with the GTX480 which was followed by the GTX580 only after a few months.

A surprise double whammy aimed at denting Intel's November launch? It would be almost like GPU wars, then, and a barrel of fun. :) At the very least the guys in marketing seem to have woken up!

I'm sure people have been saying AM3+ was a short lived socket for a while now :D?
So Pile driver would be FM2 would it not?

I think AMD's push in this area is actually forcing Intel to reluctantly fight on the IGP turf, which although is still the latter's stronghold in terms of volume, is struggling to deliver against an essentially discrete level GPU in APUs. They really could do with an Nvidia license right about now or stronger drivers, which knowing Intel, should never have been a problem for them to begin with! :) Regardless, the sales season should be fun heading into next year!

Rumor has it that the first Piledriver chips will hit FM1 to test the waters, whilst keeping the AM3+ front covered with the initial or possibly revised BD products. Who can tell for sure?
