AMD freesync coming soon, no extra costs.... shocker

Yup my bad, posting when I'm tired and getting shouted at by my son is not a good idea.

I was thinking that Richard huddy was at intel but at that time he was at AMD so it is relevant after all.

I dislike certain things Nvidia does, that's it, it's not attacking Nvidia to point out things they are doing. As for attacking Nvidia users.. I think it's incredibly clear which "team" is in here attacking how, in fact, it could not be clearer.

Can I just suggest you post things as they're written then instead of entitling even the thread itself as a sarcastic attack. Maybe that way people won't accuse you of hulking out every time Nvidia charge for something

Speaking casually:

No info on FreeSync either

The bit I like in that post is:
There are a few ways the problem can be solved, but there are very specific reasons why we’re pursuing the route of using industry standards.

The most obvious reason is ease of implementation, both for us from a corporate perspective and also for gamers who face the cost of upgrading their hardware. But the more important reason is that it’s consistent with our philosophy of making sure that the gaming industry keeps marching forward at a steady pace that benefits everyone.

It sometimes takes longer to do things that way — lots of stakeholders need to coordinate their efforts — but we know it’s ultimately the best way forward. This strategy enables technologies to proliferate faster and cost less, and that’s good for everyone.

And then he goes on to mention Mantle.

Which as far as I'm aware it's not an industry standard, there are no/few stakeholders to coordinate their efforts and I doubt it's good for everyone (Intel/Nvidia).

ADAPTIVE-SYNC ADDED TO VESA DISPLAYPORT 1.2A STANDARD

Looks like FreeSync is going to happen, only to be called AdaptiveSync.

ADAPTIVE-SYNC ADDED TO VESA DISPLAYPORT 1.2A STANDARD

As we had already reported, the formerly known standard coined as FreeSync by its creators, AMD, has finally been ratified and standardized by VESA as part of the DisplayPort 1.2a standard. As of today, however, the standard will be known as Adaptive-Sync. While it may not be as catchy for companies like AMD, which liked to brag about the fact that their version of adaptive frame rate syncing was a ‘free’ upgrade the truth is the technology is best named Adaptive-Sync. This is a more open version of what Nvidia’s currently doing with their G-Sync technology, which is also an adaptive-sync technology, but requires Nvidia GPU and Nvidia monitor electronics both of which are not only cost prohibitive but fairly closed in terms of accessibility to others. As such, Nvidia must be applauded for having brought this technology to market and for having made the issue a topic of discussion and ultimately resulting in DisplayPort’s supporting of this new adaptive-sync technology.

Adaptive-Sync is a great technology because it will allow both gaming desktop and notebook manufacturers to not only smooth out the frame rates of gaming and graphics, but also to only refresh the monitor as many times as the GPU is capable of delivering frames. This means that with fewer refreshes we could see much better power consumption and battery life out of these displays, which ultimately results in better power bills for people that always have their monitors on and better battery life for mobile devices that connect to an external display. Adaptive-Sync has been a part of VESA’s embedded DisplayPort, eDP, spec since 2009 and as a result, a lot of adaptive-sync technology is already incorporated into a lot of the components for displays that rely on eDP for internal signaling.

Implementation of DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync technology is offered to VESA members free without any license fee, which means we will likely see big monitor manufacturers like Dell and Samsung adopting this standard fairly quickly.

You are still going to need new hardware, both GPU and Monitor. A nice little value add for those buying new compliant hardware or those refreshing existing hardware down the line.

Proof will be in how well it actually works though.

So AMD powered Laptop's could get it with a Driver update.

Good, but the vast majority of us will still need a new screen, but at least there is no need for £100 worth of added hardware on top of it.

I believe AMD said all GPUs from 6000 series support this?

I think the gpu's are capable but yes we would need a new monitor.

So, there's no chance of people who just bought 4K Sammy Screens of using freesync, when they're arguably ones who need it most :p?

Yeah, this is one thing that stopped me getting one of the 4K monitors. Seems to me it's probably worth waiting and hoping that this gets included quickly on new 4K displays.

Like Shanks, I'm still undecided about this technology, but might as well have it as not have it.

I think it will depend on if it actually costs any more to make, just because there's no license fee doesn't mean there will be no added cost to manufacturers or us (there may not be). No license should help keep the cost down though.

Not a bad time to introduce it either if they get it out in time to be included in 4K displays, which could be the next big thing, meaning people would be upgrading.

I feel the same.

My experiences of Mantle have taught me that things can get smoother though, even when you think they're already smooth so i think i will like this tech. Problem is i don't anticipate on upgrading changing my monitor for a while yet.

Its my next upgrade so I keep an eye on this.

my guess is there will be a small boom on 4k monitors dp 1.2a market, me too i wanted to change my monitor, but thought i would wait to see if freesync will be adopted.
just need price to drop around 300€ and would be perfect :D

Its definitely the case. Only the monitor is the issue for AMD cards.

Source?

The specification has only just been ratified so until I see it running on existing hardware I'll reserve my judgement. Seems like too good of a bone for all the hardware vendors to pass on when they can flog you new kit.

Awaiting tedious/backwards/stupid reason why 1.2a will not work on existing kit :D
