AMD FX Overclocking

It's definitely the best real usage test for an FX tbh. Just making the chip get hot with Prime is no way to actually test stability.

That multi tasking test is absolute torture. My rigs can sail through the rest but once I get there I know I'm running a proper torture test. Haha, the amount of times I've sat there nervously chewing my finger nails watching the temps go up and down like a prairie dog ducking in and out of the hole :D

72c...71c....72c... hahahaha

Ha. Which part is that then? I just set the stress test for one hour and walk away only to check back every now and then to see if all is still running.

If you run the benchmark you will generate a score dude. It does GIMP image editing on one and two cores, then runs a handbrake, then runs a high res video, then on the multi tasking test it runs everything together.

The FX chips commit atrocities in that test :D it's everything they're good at.

Run the bench and post your scores dude. There's a thread around somewhere, IIRC Cat started it.

Cool, will see if i can dig it up later.

Here is mine, quite chuffed that i seem to have got a pretty good chip:

Nice.

benny give Realbench a go and post back with your scores!

Here's one of my runs a while back when I was tinkering with the fx8320 and not your higher rated silicon! ;) :

Also nice.

Love Realbench, stresses the chip quite nicely imo

Never took a screencap of the 9590's score but i'll see what i can do over the weekend, working my way back up from stock now trying something else :)

Curiously nice.

What else are you trying?

Matt; LOL I'll try again :D Is Crossfire V that much better over Sabertooth board? I'm trying to decide between these two boards......Both are solid for OC; just which one will I get a little more miles out of with OC :D

as my board now is way too limited; 990X revision 1 *grumbles*

Oops, sorry mate must have missed that one.

This is only my second AMD board, but everyone says both are top quality. I'd go for the Cross V, simply because the vrm temps are very low and you have lots of pci-e lanes spare just in case. :)

I'm delighted with the Crosshair V. It was a lot of money but it enabled me to overclock my FX chip to extreme lengths without worrying about vrm temps. I really do love Asus boards, they're so easy to use. I use AMD and Intel cpu's (and amd apu's) but the one thing that is constant is Asus motherboards.

I also have a 5960X system and it's very hard to tell a difference between that and my FX8370E at 5Ghz unless i have fps displays on screen. The FX system is just as snappy and cost a small fraction of what the 5960X system did.

FX system (cpu+board+ram) £380
5960X system (cpu+board+ram) £1575

Just built a new rig with an 8350 - I've used AMD since the XP2000 days.
Did a quick bit of overclocking and got 4.5 totally stable for an hour on prime95 with stock volts.
Will download RealBench tomorrow and have a look over the weekend.

Nice. I'd definitely recommend an hour of Real Bench stress test using maximum ram setting (8 or 16gb depending on what you have) as the perfect platform for 24/7 stability for FX chips.

This method works perfectly for me on AMD and Intel. :)

Thought I would chip in, Got my FX 8350 @ 4.7Ghz using 1.452 V, seems stable testing but think I will have to download the programs mentioned here and run some more tests. (First time overclocking)

Currently on a Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2.0, and Corsair H110 cooler. Have not tried playing with the FSB yet, only used the multiplier.

Nice, see if you can go up a multiplayer. That's what I've been using for overclocking for now because it's easy. At some point soon though i will start playing with the FSB.

Question for others is this was something I wanted to play with also just for **** and giggles.....undervolting and balanced OC before going full OC....which chip do we think has the best binning; I mean I can snag a 9370 for 130........which just about the same as 8370E and like 20 more than 8320E.....

I'd most likely snag a hybrid cooler; though my Noctra syc isn't too bad with push pull fan set up :)

If you like to overclock and tweak, then go for the FX8370E... or even the FX8320E if on a tight budget. I see no reason why a 8370E or a 8320E cannot reach the higher speeds. Certainly these chips are better binned, but as you know with overclocking nothing is guaranteed. If you want guaranteed clock speeds out of the box with minimal fuss I'd go for an FX 9590. Me personally, I'd go with the FX8370E or the 8320E, but i like to spend time overclocking.

Yeah honestly just roll with the 8320. Chances are you will be running around 4.7ghz for your 24/7 which is where most FX 8 owners end up any way. Mine is right on the limits temp wise at 4.9ghz but is fully stable. I just don't need another heater in here :D

If you've got a good custom water loop then 5ghz solid is definitely doable.

By the way i can run 5Ghz comfortably on my H100i at 1.476v 24/7 and temps never go over 60c and are usually in the low 50's. Using Noctua Industrial 3,000 rpm fans on the silent preset so they create no excessive noise.

That cooler does not look very good bug, perhaps time for a new case? :D The H100i kicks ass for these chips!

I run my 5Ghz overclock with cool and quiet on and C1E without issue, so the core multiplier drops under idle and so does voltage. Turbo core is disabled though because it kills overclocks.

Hey Dave; Thont; Matt......quick question as I'm going to be spending my tax return soon......I know Asus Crosshair is a beast of a board but I've been hearing that the sound chip tends to fail on them....my only consider on that board;

its either that or sabertooth; both have 8+2 phase; only board that I know of that has more is Asrock Extreme 9 with 12+2 phase lol....

I'll be snagging a 8320E for under a 100 quid soon :) will end up replacing my air cooler with most likely a 80i or 100i.....

Not heard of that issue Mel, but what i can say is the Crosshair is a lovely board that makes overclocking easy. The Sabertooth is also a quality board so i don;t think you can go wrong with either.

I have intel system and its no fun to really play with. I have am3+ system; but one of the first gen 990X which seriously has limited OC.

I'd have to spend about double to get something that will work like AMD's specially since I do a lot of virtualation :D

Don't get me wrong Intel's got some nice cpus; but not for what I want to do...

Overclocking AMD cpu's is fun, something feels good about getting a processor to 5Ghz and beyond. :D

The 8320E is the smartest choice IMO, the 8370E would be my second (but its a fair bit more for "better" binned) and I wouldn't even consider the 8350 due to it being the same price. You can't really go far wrong with any though!

Good advice. :)

cinebench should run even if your overclock is not stable but if your running it in realtime its will freeze while doing it till its finish, so its best to run it normal the 1st time, 2nd time close all programs then run in realtime as will give you around 5-10 points

Thanks for the tip!

Taken the plunge and gone for an AMD FX8320e - now to see what I can get with my Noctua hd-15 thingy! D

Good temps i reckon. :)
