AMD FX Overclocking

I'm interested in you mentioning about how you're seeing more stable vdroop, I'm not sure how that would really change but it's interesting you've noticed that. As i've always overclocked using the offset way for quite some years now.

I used to get an millisecond of vdroop slightly below my stable/desired volt before LLC corrected, it never caused an issue and was never a problem (If my OC cant handle a millisec of vdroop, then its not stable IMO) It was only really noticeable when ramping up full load on CPU quickly, like prime.
I have not noticed it since switching. Could be placebo though as there is no reason it should make a diff. Its all working with offsets now so I'm happy to tell myself it helps.

I have fond memories of the AXIA 1ghz Thunderbirds oced to 1.5 the days of 50% OCing with ease.

BTW no I don't have a power meter sorry, they are for non-lazy people only.

Absolutely - I vaguely recall some proper ghetto hacks to get it up to the speed I wanted.

OK I've changed to the offset route, have a look and see if you think the settings sound ok.

I've got both CPU and CPU/NB offset set to 0.100000
Bios reports a CPU offset voltage of 1.392
Bios Reports a CPU/NB offset voltage of 1.250

Its idling at 0.948V via HWMonitor, goes up to 1.416V under full load.

I currently have CPU LLC set to Ultra High (still got extreme above that) and CPU/NB LLC set to High (with extreme available above if need be).

Full load package temps are identical to when OC on manual voltage at 56 degrees after an hour of Prime on small FFT's. Idle package temp is about 9 degrees cooler than manual volts at 13 degrees. WIN!

Does that all sound ok?

Now I assume i could up the LLC to extreme and reduce the offset accordingly?

Blimey I'm surprised this thread has so many replies! Good work chaps and glad to see people enjoy playing with our FX cpus. :)

I asked the PSU question last night on there m8 :) Love the build.

You still in Norwich all my dads side from there I know it very very well :)
 
piece one bought; found a deal for corsair h80i for 67 new :) working on next piece; either will be processor or video card; most likely video card have to decide *also make sure they will fit in my case either Tri-X and PCS+* if they don't I'll do some surgery to get them to fit :D

I can find both for 199 right now.....but pretty sure I can get them cheaper muahah;
 
Finally got round to sorting out an offset overclock on my FX-8320.

My CPU VID is 1.275, so I've set an offset of +0.115 on the VCore and +0.1 on the NB. I have a multi of 20.5 and FSB set to 220, giving me a nice stable overclock of 4.5GHz.

Most importantly I've been able to re-enable the power saving functions on my FX, which is awesome. CPU clocks down to 1.5GHz (0.08V) when not really in use and ramps all the way up to 4.5 (1.38V) when being taxed.

sadly pretty much the only picture I have left of my 9590 @5ghz all cores in cinebench R15

a few scores there as I was tweaking stuff and retesting - wanted to break 800 and nudge closer to the haswell score
 
I remember Andy pushing hard to achieve the same thing (which he did) on a 8350 I think. I have no doubt a high binned 9590 would achieve this with good cooling, probably topping out at around 5.2Ghz.

I know AMDMatt has hit good levels on his chip.
 
You can get a fair few extra points if you run cinebench in high priority through task manager, mitigates the few % CPU spikes from background applications.
