AMD hopes to put a little Mantle in OpenGL Next

As much as it is enjoyable to run down mantle and poke fun at AMD for certain people, I cannot deny that AMD do seem to have a good clear idea of what they want for Mantle and how they want it to proceed.
Of course only time will tell how well things pan out for it, hopefully it will do ok, as the couple of times I've used it has (other than the bugs) it has certainly been a pleasurable experience and improved the gaming on those particular machines.

Scan read most of it, there is a lot.

Basically Nvidia and ATI butchering OpenGL for proprietary extensions to try and out do each-other left no room for cross platform development; killed developer interest.

Yeah, reading it-it seems everyone added there own little nail to the coffin(including opengl/ARB themselves.

Theres seems to have been a lot of moments that they could have destroyed d3d but never actually did it/took too long. Coupled with bad luck/decisions on 3d labs' part, even though they were the right one in the long run but just ahead of there time.

He even says Microsoft may have had abit of a hand in it all (sabotage). But its doubtful.

Hope there next iteration does better as its close to the metal ala mantel/dx12.

I hope the Khronos Group are wise enough to police their own API should they chose to revive it.

Its going to continue being something good but unloved and unused if the remaining 2 or 3 start pulling it apart for their own pound of flesh, again!

Of course they have a clear idea of what they want to do with it. Do you think Dice/EA developed it with AMD to then be licenced to developers ? Hell no, no-one in their right mind would pay for it. That's why they have the uptake they do at the moment, not only do they have no restrictions in place, but arguably imo, they are paying people to use it.

I tried gaming on dx and then on mantle, the performance increase was massive, not to mention the fps. Mantle is truly outstanding.

Nvidia users enjoying Mantle=the Mantle effect.

Wondered how long before they got tired of it and tried to palm the heavy lifting off to a 3rd party :S

What are you talking about?

How are AMD going to get this into Linux without giving it to Khronos?

AMD gave away an API, millions of $ and years of development, given away for free and without restrictions to an Open Source Developer to do with what they like. this your reaction?

Time and time again you and others have hit and complained on the fact that its AMD's API with them in control.

Again, they have just given it away to the Open Source community.

Your not making any sense with that at all. AMD just can't come good no matter what they do.

Explain how AMD could better get this API into Open Source, your idea's will make interesting reading.

What about working with Khronos ? Like Nvidia do, when they have new tech they go out to developers and help them implement it into games etc. All I see is Dice/EA/AMD's Mantle being given away and Khronos being told.... 'Here, do what you want with it, there's no restrictions' typically that's probably the best support they could give.

They are working with Developers, 75 of them as we speak, its written in the OP.

They are continuing to develop Mantle themselves with Game Developers, Khronos are an OS / API developer with full unrestricted access to Mantle, they can take bits from it to create a new API or improve OpenGL, or stich it into Linux as it is.... if Khronos need AMD's help in achieving that no doubt they will get it.

Its two different development process, AMD still have an "AMD API" which they are pushing forward, but they have also given it to Khronos so they can make an "OpenGL V-2.0?" API, AMD aren't going to refuse Khronos help in achieving that should they need it, but why would they need that help? are they not competent in doing that?

Until know, Internet vs. Mantle is like:

-AMD users that can use it well and happy about it: big performance gains in certain situations (quite big), with the vRAM limitation for the moment in BF 4;
-AMD users that have problems with it and hate it or waiting for an update;
-nVIDIA fans that see nothing good on it, blame AMD for "splitting" the market (although it ain't the case and that most definitely goes quite the opposite).

Can't really see a fair point, brand unbiased, to why Mantle or an API like it, is a bad approach on things, when there is no locking out any of the other vendors.

+1

Nvidia, Intel, AMD will get Mantle by proxy in the form of DX12 and; lets call it OpenGL 2.0.

Right now, AMD users just Get DX12 early.

I still have no idea how Mantle will benefit me but I like the name and I like what Has been said and will enjoy GTA 5 with it ;)

Ryse: Son of Rome Will Support AMD’s Mantle API

German website Hardwareluxx revealed that Crytek’s upcoming PC version of Ryse: Son of Rome will support AMD’s Mantle API. This obviously does not surprise us as most – if not all – future CRYENGINE-powered games will support this API. After all, we believe that this was one of the reasons Crytek decided to implement native support for Mantle in CRYENGINE.

Ryse will support 4K resolutions and aims to look glorious on the PC. In addition, the PC version of Ryse will come with bonus material originally released as downloadable content, including: The Colosseum Pack containing two character skins and two Arena maps; the Mars’ Chosen Pack containing one new character skin, four Arena maps, and the new Survival mode; the Duel of Fates Pack containing two character skins, two Arena maps, and one additional Survival map; and the Morituri Pack, with three new Arena maps, two Survival maps, and five solo Arena maps.

Ryse: Son of Rome is currently planned for a Fall 2014 release on the PC.

We’ve already contacted Crytek and we’ll have a tech interview about this game in the coming months, so stay tuned for more!
