AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe"

50% off X2's? So say that's about £150-£180 for a 4400+, the Conroe E6400 is supposedly priced in this range too, Intel have really done well this time.

Conroe does use the 775 socket, but new mobos are required due to power requirements.

From XS, " 1) Boards based on the 975X chipset, available for sale right now, are NOT Conroe compatable, nor will they be with just a BIOS update. The reason why is that the current boards all have a PWM buck controller that does not support VRM revision 11. At the very least a small revision to the board will need to be made along with a new BIOS. End of story."

interesting how the article states AMD have priced AM2 at the same prices as legacy(I assume 939) parts. Yet retailers are asking a lot more for them in comparision.

We being ripped off here? or have 939 parts dropped in price to clear inventory?

Great news! Win-win situation for all of us! :D

quoted for truth!

what ever floats your boat, be it Intel or AMD, it's turning out to be a buyers market for once. nice to see some healthy competition.

if the x2 3800 goes quite cheap i think ill jus get that to replace my winnie 3000 tbh, maybe give conroe a miss altogether :o

Think it might be time to sell my opteron and go for a dual core, not sure if it will be intel or amd yet. Im a bit (lot) of an amd fanboy. Aint bought an intel in 10 years, fancy a change.

Letting things like who youve been with for the last 10 years getin your way will only screw you over. Buy whats best, whichever one that is, for the money. Just now that looks like conroe.

I agree however in the past intel have always been over priced compaired to amd and s*** most of the time IMO ( as I said I am a fanboy). Either way I dont think I will get conroe as it will probably go for a premium and the current duals cores should be more than good enought for me at the moment. especially as they will be cheap....

Please... I hope/pray that the price for the E6600 (or the whole Duo2 series) to be reasonably priced. Hope this AMD move will make Intel think 2x about pricing and retail shortage...

Sounds good, will mean I can upgrade to dual core cheaply soon. Won't bother with Conroe as it means I have to get a new motherboard and RAM as well as a new CPU. Will save my full upgrade for a while as my machine isn't struggling at tasks in the slightest yet.

Just so you know I recieved an e-mail from annother store this morning (which I wont mention of course) informing me that I could buy a 3800+ A64 939 Retail Venice from them for £95 inc VAT...

I think OCUK are going to need to adjust their prices sharpish, as currently they are selling the same chip for over £100 more...
