AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe"

Wow - just read your post about the 3800 prices, and thought I'd check out the store (the one I suspect emailed you) :

Retail 3000 £61.45inc
Retail 3200 £69.70inc
Retail 3500 £77.96inc
Retail 3800 £96.80inc

Looks like AMD are getting nervous already !!

Funny thing about this is that it just shows what sort of margins AMD were making on the chips, when they knew they were on top and had no one to really challenge them.

And people seem to promote AMD as a big cuddly bear whereas Intel is an evil corporate entity.

Not saying this is something which is specific to AMD because all companies do it (even Intel), but it just goes to show that they are in the business of making money, not friends... despite what some short-sighted fanboys might think..

Nobody doubts that both companies make phenomenal piles of cash.

At the same time, I would hate to see their R&D costs

If only the 3700 was in between the 3500 and 3800, that would be a bargain!

Wow, great news.

Those 3800+ are seriously damn good prices!

The only overclockers price which sort of competes with those is the 3500+ Skt939 Venice which is £85

Why are they waiting until after conroe is released?. Surely they'd be better off dropping their prices now, to grab as many impatient upgraders as possible?
If people have to wait until conroe to get hold of cheaper AMDs, then chances are they'll go for a conroe instead.

Thats it i would love to pick one of those x2 cores for cheap but if i have to wait for conroe i might aswell get one of those then.

Engage smug mode...... :D

Got a good price back for my X2 4800, even though by these prices I paid a few quid too much for the 3000. Still, at £70, there wasn't much in it.

Even if Conroe turns out to be a pile of cack now, I can grab another cheapo X2
