AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe"

What the bloody hell.

How hav you managed that?

Just an el cheapo 3200, then wiat until after the AMD price cut and see, what to go for then. If u went for Conroe (now and didnt buy a new el cheapo CPU) i carnt see how you would manger going over a month without a PC.

edit

What its a rabbit, i thought it was some kind of goblins head.

Heck no, one core will play games, the other will run virus checks or whatever leaving the other two cores totally obsolete.

1 Core runs the Game AI, another does the physics, another runs favourite p2p program to download more games and the 4th runs Folding@Home... so simple.

On a serious note it's a classic "If you build it they will come" situation. Though games still arent 64bit so AMD's effect on game developers is questionable.

Actually, I'll just take this opportunity to say that I am a bit of an AMD fanboy but if I had any money to play with at the moment (which I don't and stop tempting me) I would wait until Conroe is out, AMD have had time to react and probably plump for the Conroe. As it is probably going to be (to be honest) a better product.

A cheap 3800x2 still doesn't look like great (well, ok, not bad) value for money compared to a well clocked 165/170?

However, having said all that I'm going to dogedy wait for the recently announced Pentium 10 with as many cores and a full 1GB of Cache. That matched with 8 GeForce9's and 32GB of RAM should see me through the next decade :)

I'm going to go away, balance my cheque book a couple of times and cry now. Are you happy??? :(

;)

I reckon AMD have plenty of time to get 65nm chips out the door before Conroe becomes a problem. Sure, conroe is set for a July launch but i really doubt it will be in any retail channels before September and wont be at the prices announced until a while after that. The thing is, i seriously doubt AMD can pull back enough with 65nm to get back a performance advantage.

I reckon this time next year we will be in the same situation as the Athlon XP... with AMD offering a better value but less powerfull processor. These price cuts are setting AMD down that road at least until K8L comes out.

What are you basing that on? Conroe has been in production for some time now, with high yields and no production issues. I'm pretty sure all retail outlets will have them in stock long before the official launch date, in preparation for the initial rush and the clearance of pre-orders.

Initial thoughts from a supplier I know is that companies like Dell have taken a huge share of the 'production' chips.

My local supplier cant even get them in until mid september guaranteed...confirmed and he uses a big supplier in this country.

I think some will be suprised at the demand for conroe..and many will be waiting.

Funny thing about this is that it just shows what sort of margins AMD were making on the chips, when they knew they were on top and had no one to really challenge them.

And people seem to promote AMD as a big cuddly bear whereas Intel is an evil corporate entity.

Not saying this is something which is specific to AMD because all companies do it (even Intel), but it just goes to show that they are in the business of making money, not friends... despite what some short-sighted fanboys might think..

The cost of manufacture of single chip is tiny - the cost is mostly in the R&D and setting up the factory in the first place. By now I expect the A64 R&D has been mostly covered so the prices can afford to be dropped. I don't think the fact the prices are coming down indicates they have been ripping us off for the last two years. The concern is to have enough resources to develop the next generation.

with these price cuts and that dual socket board comming out. im sure people will be running twin dual cores to give 4 cores of hardcore action. :D

Isn't this only going to work with the expensive FX chips though?

so all the Athlon 64 X2 1MB cache (AM2 socket) are not on sale at all? from the price sheet, it seems like only the 3800+ 4200+ 4600+ and etc are on sale???

can anyone confirm this?

As far as I can judge by the above links, that's correct.

@DiGi Punk nice one mate! :D

Gues you dont do much vid/photo editing - render on two, run ps on other, batch clean high iso images on neatimage on another. As Homer would say "mmmmmmmm, cores"

It's nice to see the x2 3800+ coming down already. I've seen it around for £165 incl VAT. I was planning to go down the Intel route after conroe comes out but with the AMD price cuts and the possibility of a £120 x2 3800+, I may have to reconsider!
