AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe"

Like I said a x2 at a lower price now is tempting, but the day after conroe is released well theres no way I will buy one, of course some people with a small budget will take advantage and buy a x2, but I can afford both so I will wait I dont like the idea of buying a 939 now with am2 out, plus all new intels are on 775 so that socket should outlast the 939. Ah time to order in some ddr2 I think. Then im committed to conroe :)

the very bottom of the rung conroe won't have 64bit, don't think it has some other crap and also will run at a lower bus.

This worries me somewhat, as I was considering a budget Conroe for a new machine which will probably be upgraded to Vista when it arrives. Have you got a link to a chart or anything with the features of each model? Thanks

E4200 is set to be the low-end part with just 2Mb cache, an 800MHz FSB and does not include Intel SpeedStep technology, EM64T or Execute Disable Bit while all the others do

It's just occurred to me. This means everyone thinking of selling their 939 rigs to buy Conroe better get them sold before the price cuts otherwise buying a new 939/AM2 CPU will be cheaper than buying second hand one in some cases  :D

Don't worry, just get the E6300. That one will be pretty cheap and have all the bells and whistles. I think there might even be an E6200, but I'm not entirely sure atm.

i thought that but i want to keep it because i dont want no rubbish cpu. I think im gonna use mine un a seprate comp

Without trawling through the whole thread...Has there been any mention from AMD of the price changes affecting Opterons?

you forgetting going conroe means new mobo and ram as well as cpu?

no, doesn't really matter either. a lot of people upgrading will be upgrading from xp and intel rigs to the current amd/intel chips. a fairly small percentage will already have a 775 intel(especially that supports conroe) or a 939 system, let alone if you were going am2 version of a amd chip which would mean new stuff for 99% of the people on this forum let alone the rest of the world.

when i buy a board i sell a board, when i buy mem i sell mem. i don't wait 3 years to upgrade so the current system i have is pretty decent and hasn't dropped its value hugely.

also yeah, i forgot that the stupid conroe with stuff disabled was the E4200, the article i was getting prices from didn't mention the E4200 so i just assumed it was the lowest one they mentioned, the E6300. which makes the E6300 everything you need in a cpu. the only issue with that might be with dividers for mem, achievable fsb and the possible overclock you can get as its a very low clocked cpu.

with these price cuts and that dual socket board comming out. im sure people will be running twin dual cores to give 4 cores of hardcore action. :D

Imagine two X2 3800s for £100 each...nice...

But will it be of much use? :p

Sounds good, will mean I can upgrade to dual core cheaply soon. Won't bother with Conroe as it means I have to get a new motherboard and RAM as well as a new CPU. Will save my full upgrade for a while as my machine isn't struggling at tasks in the slightest yet.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was planning to go with a Conroe CPU when they arrive, but that obviously means a new mobo, ddr2 ram, and possibly a psu? (don't know about the PSU). But anyways, this rate you could get a really decent AMD X2 and clock it a bit for dirt cheap price! Should make any s939 system last longer until perhaps a new system is finally needed... be that a Windows Vista machine with a 2nd Gen DX10 card and an Intel CPU. :D

Makes sense to me!

Ah nice one. That was the one I was looking at - I didn't realise there were going to be lower models

Just waiting for my insurance company to payout on the Opty165 i managed to break
Another Opty or Conroe/Mobo/Ram.Tough decision.

Opteron after a argument with floor/concrete step! Floor won :o
