AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe"

Anybody think they'll give in to the temptation of a cheap X2 3800+ instead of their originally planned Conroe? Be honest!

nah the x2's need to come down a lot more to tempt me at the moment ;)

Yes I agree, although a 4600+ for less than a 400+ doesnt seem bad no? Extra cache suppose to be equivalent as 200mhz am I wrong?

That's cause everyone wants the 1MB L2 cache for willy waving rights. I'll be sure to do a lot of willy waving with my 4MB L2 cache Conroe! :p

its going to have to do more than that for me to get my wallet out

I imagin the propper price cuts for the X2's won't kick in til after Conroe.

AMD will want to milk as much as poss before then.

hold out man i can only see them getting cheaper! I mean... they couldnt possibly go up again could they?

You never know really, look what happend when Socket A got phased out due to 939, CPU prices shot up...and now AM2 will soon phase out 939

But socket 939 was clearly better than socket A, and also better than the competition, and you could reuse ** existing RAM. For socket AM2 none of the above is true, although u may find the cooler cpus overclock a bit better, however conroe is still a lot better. AMD needs to do price cuts to interest me, or Ill just stick with what Ive got.

I think Amd should drop the prices now and start dumping the 939,s Because when Conroe comes out it will be hard for some people to buy a AMD chip even if cheaper on a socket that will be phased out. Most overclockers want to see want the Conroe can do for them, and although I wouldn,t mind a X2 I know more or less what gains to expect from it in speed. But if in a weeks time X2,s dropped in price Amd would sell loads of them, after all they will phase the 939 out no matter what happens.

Interesting opinion but, whilst Conroe isn't available for atleast another 6 weeks, AMD will be the choice for people if they need a new pc right now. AMD know this is the case that's why they want to make as much money now, cause they'll make hardly anything once Conroe arrives. With the exception of AMD fanboys.

what i don't get is, the E6600 has 4mb cache and clearly they will clock well and spank anything amd can get out before december. it will be $316, so about the current price of a am2 4000+ or so. that isn't nearly the cheapest conroe there will be. the very bottom of the rung conroe won't have 64bit, don't think it has some other crap and also will run at a lower bus.

prices of $530, $316, $224 and $183 for the E6700, E6600, E6400, and E6300 which run at 2.67GHz, 2.40GHz, 2.13GHz, and 1.86GHz. the last 2 have 2mb cache, first two have 4mb. the lowest one is still 65nm, will probably overclock hugely if you can just whack the fsb up to the normal fsb, and be on par in price to the 3800+ x2. the next one up is still pretty damned cheap at $224 and supports everything(as vista is comparitively close not having 64 bit is pretty silly).

buying an amd cpu as an upgrade if you can afford whatever $224(guessing around the £140-150 mark) would seem to be a fairly stupid thing to do. less heat, less power, better overclocking, faster and generally k8 spanking, there shouldn't be a choice. also tbh, if you can't afford that and really need something budget a 805 at $95 which you should at least hit 3.4Ghz and possibly much much more. i'm not a huge fan of the current P4 duallies, but at that price, again, it is just to good.

if i find myself in a cash crisis i'll go for the $224 conroe, if i can i'll grab the E6600 with the full cache. i think its tweaktown that have benchmarked the x6800, the e6700, x6600 and the e6400 all together. the extra cache, as with the x2's, doesn't make that big a difference, certainly doesn't stop even the 2.13Ghz spanking the fx 62 in a bunch of benchies.

coming from a x2 4400/3800, venice(all of them i think), newcastle(most of them), san diego 3700+, ES 3600+(was a 2.2Ghz 1mb cache, multi unlocked FX marked as a unreleased 3600+), and a bunch of other athlon stuff its not like i want to go intel, but theres just nothing to stop me till K8L.
