AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

?????

The 300 series only had custom designs, no reference ones. Not sure what your smoking, or maybe just trolling I guess.

was talking about this one, newegg is selling them if you google it.

The bottom line is AMD need to be gunning for the bigger 1070 on performance and price.

If they don't or can't Nvidia deny them sales by competing hard on small GPU's nvidia can push out like paper clips.

Yeah, if its £200+ Nvidia will just jump on them with a GTX 1060 for the same money and AMD no longer have a competitive GPU to sell.

Indeed, the 1070 is already only 150w so Nvidia will easily be able to have the 1060 rival 390x/980 performance for a decent bit less than 150w and near £200.

I hope AMD have something to say on P10 tonight that puts all this speculation to bed.

And i hope its something along the lines of 'around 980ti performance', $325, bang! done/

Yeah their party line this release seems to be about regain market share and to do that they need to hit those 2 sweet spots - the 1070 and the "1050"/1060 type position running.

390 & 390X were far superior products than the GTX970. However still the 970 sold a lot regardless it's issues. Because (I do not want to swear) users in here promoted it.

Same applies to 980Ti and the FuryX/Nano. Even if AMD comes out with a GPU that is far superior to what ever Nvidia has, still they will not sell as many as they could, because simply Nvidia is a religion for many.

Because, and I write it all the time, instead of pelting NV with rotten tomatoes and eggs with the GTX970 con, they clap at them and promoted/advices (the users) the product to others.

And even yesterday you had some people in here mentioning driver issues with AMD cards back to 68xx era, hence they do not want to hear about AMD card to be proposed to them. That's 5y away! NV has more driver issues the last year.
(hell did anyone looked at the current issues with the 1080?)

Also I'm willing to bet that no perf or price information gets released tomorrow. That will be under NDA till the 29th.

Tomorrow they'll talk about Vulkan, DX12, blah de blah, and tomorrow morning we'll still be arguing here about whether AMD is doooomed or not :p

But hey, at least you'll hear all the juicy info about AMD's latest Bulldozer iteration! Yippie!

Based on what? Now dx12 is here, yes the 390/390x looks a better buy if you only play hitman and ashes of the singularity. No doubt there will be more DX12 titles coming out but by then the 300series and 900 series will be old news and not many will care.

At the time of release the 970 was a very good card. It rivalled or sometimes beat the 290x for ~£260 and only had a 145tdp! It also ran very cool and overclocked extremely well.

Yeah, I remember reading that. 970 had ramgate issue, but people said it is no problem, 3.5gb is more than enough.

Fast forward 9 months, same people were saying 4gb is not enough anymore, yet still recommended the 970. Can't get greener and more bias than that.

As I said earlier, the blind leading the blind. Lol :p

No, they really weren't. On day of release, AMD were still catching up to Nvidia driver-wise with their Hawaii cards. It had become more even by then, but its only been relatively recently that the 390 has pulled ahead and become a better value.

AMD's problem is that they haven't been releasing a better product on Day 1. It's taking nearly a year of driver updates to get them into the position they are today. While Nvidia hit their stride, driver-wise, very quickly. This makes a big difference on public perception. First impressions are important.

AMD have clearly been making a big effort with drivers lately and they need to focus that effort for their new cards. This could potentially be the most important of this strategy. If P10 is 'decent' at first, value-wise, but turns great later, not enough people will still be paying attention. They need 'great' from Day 1.

At 1080p, 3.5GB of vRAM actually is still entirely fine. Very few situations call for more than that. There's not a game out there that the 970 cant do at 1080/60fps with quality settings.

The 970/980 has been out 1 year 8 months now and is now being replaced. The fact that the hideously less efficient hawaii chips are only just starting to overtake them and flex their muscles isnt that exciting.

For the few that keep cards for years it might be. Let's not kid ourselves though, most of us on here will have a pascal or polaris card by the end of the year.

The 390 is a far more powerful GPU than the 970 but its a V6 vs a V12 with half its HT leads pulled off.

The 970 is basically a GTX 770 on steroids.

To be fair it doesn't matter how powerful a GPU is, its how much of that power it can use, Nvidia up to this point are far better than AMD of squeezing more of that out, so they are able to use smaller more power efficient GPU's.

Nothing wrong with that, in fact it is better to do so.

My 290 was not hot nor was it loud, but here is the thing, my 200mm BitFenix 900RPM case intake fan makes A LOT more noise than my 970, that fan is one of the quietest 200mm fans you can get.
And overclocked to 1500/1950 64c is the hottest i have ever seen the GPU.

The 970 is an appealing GPU by its own true right, for good reason.

The few? How do you know this?

I definitely agree for us regulars, (well I am mainly a regular lurker, but only recently went crazy posting) we will likely upgrade every 12-24 months.

However many people come here lurking or ask for advice on what gpu is best for them and you can see a lot of them don't know what's what and they don't keep up with things like we do or game as much. Chances are these people do not upgrade every year.

Not many give genuine advice that is best for the user. They don't stop and ask questions to understand what the users needs are to best tailor the advice.

Let them enjoy paying more for their efforts. Now that the 1070 is debuting at over £300 we should see the low tier 1060 come in at the old 970's price segment at over £200. Fantastic isn't it?
