AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

People expecting Polaris 10 to be a big heavy-hitter are probably going to be disappointed, imo. I think the first thing AMD are trying to do, is produce something with fantastic performance per watt. Because what they want is the far more lucrative mobile market. And I believe they'll get it.

High-end discrete GPUs will come later, I think. I'm personally just interested to see what the new architecture can do and how power-thirsty it is, at this point.

It will be the custom and ofcourse more expensive models that will make Polaris shine. If p10/11 clock well then they will punch above their weight.

If the 470x is rumoured to be 1280sp and is 380-380x performance at 1ghz, it will still clock higher even if it is just bus powered. It is pretty good going since my 7870 requires two pcie x6 connectors. But even this rumour could be understating the final target performance, they could be clocked at 1300 for all we know.

I'd give it 50/50. What I do know is that the 1080 is just the principle that if you throw enough power at anything, you can get it to go faster. 1080 isn't any real development of what we have already. It's basically the same with a little bit more squeezed out of it. When AMD do give us a new high-end GPU based on Vega, I have every expectation it will blow the socks of the 1080. I just don't know if that will be before the year end, or not.

Doubt it will blow the socks off of the gtx 1080 ti (probably around 50% faster than the gtx 980 ti).

If Fiji had a better rop to sp ratio and was able to feed its shaders well it would have far better performance at 1080p than it currently has. Considering the improvements and higher rop to sp ratio gcn 4 appears to have it should perform very well.

Pascal is a epic fail.
Polaris offers something new.
If you check fps and compare 1080 with Furyx, its pretty bad looking for that kind of money (800 euro  ] buying a founders edition starved on power. If you have a 980ti 1080 offers nothing new. People quote % instead of fps and its a reason for that.

That people are happy with the same old rehearsed is beyond me.

The only thing wrong with Pascal is the price, if there was proper competition then the price would go down.

Right.....

I think it would be a good idea for AMD to say something and very soon, they are silencing themselves even further into irrelevancy.

People need reminding that there is more than one GPU designer.
Even i have to remind my self to check in here every now and then....

No one knows that ^^^^ we are just assuming as AMD are silent and its an event where they might do that..

They are relatively quiet, I really hope it's not a big dissapointment.

Even if they are just competing for the lower sub 1070 market they at least need to say something about that which matters.

IMO one of the reasons AMD share is so low is because they are distant, every single time they let Nvidia hold all the lime light and remain utterly silent.

By the time AMD get around to saying "were still here" the world says "oh... you, yeah sorry, moved on, didn't think you were still in it"

Nvidia have shown their hand, no need for the secrecy now.

The only problem with the GTX 1080 is AMD enthusiasts !!!!

If only loyal AMD enthusiasts would buy more Fiji and Hawaii based cards it would force NVidia to keep their prices lower.:D:)

Anything new about Polaris? when does this AMD conference thing start?

The investor talk today specifically wont mention Polaris in detail, that is from an official AMD employee.

AMD say they will be at Computex but no official word about Polaris at computex. I'm sure at the minimum Polaris will be talked about and we will get more details but no guarantee of a launch event. AMD were very careful with what they said "on schedule, will be at computex, AIB partners are not frustrated". They didn't dispel the rumour that the AIB partners wont have Polaris cards at computex.

IMO,it is simply because Polaris is as sated by AMD, a mainstream and low-end part. It may be absolutely fantastic, better performance er watt than Pascal, and way better priced. But if they don't have cards that compete with the 1080 then they have a hard marketing message to do right now. people want to see a 1080 vs Polaris 10 benchmark leak, not a 970 vs 390 vs P10 showing Poalris smashing the old gen cards out the water.
