It is likely to clock significantly less because Pascal has been engineered to clock well at the expense of IPC. AMD have increased IPC which will undoubtedly affect max clocks because the 2 are intrinsically linked.
Argh!
Read the rest of this page.
So you comping 1079 to 1080? My guess they would lock similarly, the 1070 might clock higher due to better thermals.
But you are ignoring that way less than 25% of the 1070 is disabled. 25% of the CUs are disabled but that is a much smaller, percentage of the entire GPU. A lot of die area exist in things like video encoding, ROPs, memory interface, GPU front-end that exist in the entirety.
So basically the 1070 will likely be around a stock 980ti if rumours are to believed and probably won't clock anywhere as good as a 980ti does? However it will be cheaper and on a new platform which has its own benefits.
That's actually not a bad thing, basically offering your previous tier top card as the next tier lower tier and cheaper. I still expect the 1070 to sell in droves many people don't over clock their cards and being told your basically getting a 980ti for £250-300 will make them fly off the shelves
Hopefully AMD can spoil that party, they need to do something special and I hope they do

Well technically the memory is cut down too (though not the interface) because it has 80% of the memory bandwidth.
And again, the point is if you took the 1070 as completely 25% smaller, then P10 would be ~15% larger (or more transistors). So then you'd assume it would handily beat the 1070.
I agree that it's not as simple as that, so I'm saying I expect them to be more like within 5% of each other. But I'll be very surprised (based on specs of the processes) if P10XT is significantly slower than the 1070.
The 1070 has a complete 256bit memory interface just like a the 1080, so all the die area for the memory is being utilized at 100%.
The best waY to look at is the performance effect of loosing the CUs. About 19-20% slower in most situations. So 1070 is 80% of the 1080.
Polaris 10 will be close, maybe another 15-20% behind.
Another hint about polaris as well.
From one of the guys at computex, possible hint at polaris being better than expected?

So...the clockspeed of the memory has no effect on performance, just the bit-width?

It has no effect on the die area being utilized. You are trying to make a comparison of die area, not memory clock speeds which are an entirely different discussion.

Interesting indeed. Looks like my next gpu will likely be an AMD one then. Might just get me a nice FreeSync monitor to go with it![]()
DP mind keeping the mass debate on 1070 vs 1080 to the Nvidia threads please? By all means compare with Polaris but try and keep the main body to Polaris, adding a single line about Polaris to your wall of text about Nvidia is clever but very transparent.
Not just this post host most of your posts in this thread mate, we know your a massive Nvidia fan it's obvious to all, but try to leave it at the door and just discuss Polaris or at least keep it centered on Polaris.

Hopefully AMD can surprise us.
