AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Is Cool and Quiet disabled when overclocking ?

Say I overclocked my 940 to 3.4 Ghz, would it still (when idle) run at 800 Mhz as it does now at stock ?

CnQ isn't disabled automatically. You can disable it in the BIOS.

CnQ normally still works when overclocking black edition CPUs using the multiplier. It can cause all sorts of problems for frequency overclocking once you start messing with voltages. If you just overclock your black edition on multiplier you should be fine.

Just starting off with my 955BE,

3.812GHz(19x200) @ 1.400v
DDR3 1600MHz 8-8-8-24
Haven't touched HT Freq,NB or any of their voltages.
Temps are from 1hour stress under Prime95, Idle's normally around 33 ish

Getting stability problems at 19.5x multi, other than upping Core VID (1.470 is about as high as i want to go for 24/7) Should i be looking at tweaking NB/HT settings now to push on further?

I'll update with Stability shots,Fritz and hopefully better Super Pi and Clocks on Saturday when i have a chance to leave some windows open and cool my office down
Blasted Central Heating!:(

lemzip. It is the same for me. I can get 201x19 stable but changing to 202 makes it unstable. I really think that some of these chips have a hard wall for oc at about 3.85GHz. You never see anyone with a clock of 3.9. Either you can get above 3.85 - in which case you can hit 4 or 4.1 or you cant.

I can get 4.1 to boot but cant get it stable even on really high vcore.

i can prime95@ 4.2Ghz small ftt or blend @ 1.55v however i just cannot cope with the heat and i get thermal throttling, with the back doors open on a cold night/early morning ie 12-2am i can prime for 2-3hours and around 48c load.

Perhaps water would be my only way of clocking with the multi and keeping temps down.

Tempted to get some water cooling for the cpu bt its so not worth it money wise for 200Mhz.

This is a clock I'm currently working on, I'm certain I can push it further but with only having an AM2+ board (and pc6400 RAM) at the moment I'm being held back. I'm running this at the moment for 12+ hours a day with gaming and video encoding with no issues at all and nice temps considering I only have an AC64 :)

hmm. interesting. I never dared go as high as 1.55. It really is tempting. I would love to get to 4...

Dont know much about the sythe mungen but I am guessing it is pretty good right? At least its good to know you could get to 4 if you ever did decide to go for watercooling.

Didnt you used to have a triple core? Did you manage to get the 4th stable? How?

yeah, mugen 2 is good, just put it this way, i had a h50 as a test and it got sent back so quickly as my mugen 2 is better then the h50 by a mile.

This is a actual locked deneb chip, so i have it unlocked @ 4 cores and 3.8Ghz 1.4v and 2800NB, didnt need to do anything special with it, set to acc auto and unleashing on and it was fine and prime stable under 1.285v

Nice. Guess a really high end air or WC is your only option for getting cooler then.

At what temp did you start getting throttling?

in hw monitor is way saying around 55c however i know its off by 6-7 to the bios so it was hitting 62c and the vcore was being dropped to 1.17v for a few seconds then back up etc, while the door is open i dont get any issues so its deffo heat.

The mugen 2 is up there with the high quality coolers, maybe 1-2c off megas so only option is water and its not worth it for the extra few Mhz..

Hmmm. Having pretty much given up on getting anything more out of my one. I am now considering going for a higher vcore and trying again. I saw someone on one thread. running 1.7V vcore on air so maybe I can dare to hit 1.55.

I am also kicking myself for getting a 550 just before the 555s came out for basically the same price. I wonder if I could sell my cpu (given that it is a guaranteed triple core) for not too much less than I bought it for and try again with a 555...

The unlocked versions of 550s do not fall under any official category so I think they may just appear different to what they really are in cpu-z. My one claims to be a phenom II x4 even though it only has 3 cores.

That is normal. The unlock disables the temp sensors. No one can see them.

You have to use the mobo temp sensor. Hw monitor should be able to pick that up. It is the one that increases as you stress the cpu. Remember that you should always add 5-10 C on to that value though just to be on the safe side (it is not as accurate).

eddy, if you going to get a 555 i would get one soon as it looks like the current batch's serem to unlock with no problem, could be different later.

Arg. You are right. Might have to keep this a secret from my gf!:D

Is there any way of telling what batch one is from if I buy? Which batch is the good one?

They are stamped on the processor itself, ideally you not going to know what you going to get unless you get it in person from a shop.

You are looking for something like 0931 APWN or similar, there is a forum that lists what have been unlocked by users, good indication (but not 100%) that the chip you have will or wont unlock. I can provide the detail by trust for the forum

Lemzip: sent you an email.

McGill: I would start by increasing the cpu multiplier (assuming you have a black edition processor). This is the easiest way to overclock. Do this in increments testing with prime95 for stability.
