AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

i think i'll be changing my motherboard in april to a 890fx chipset board.. some of the boards have 5 or 6 pci-e x16 slots :D.. one site says it should be round £140, but i don't that so tbh.

Who was it in this thread that was having problems with their chip "throttling" down to x4 multi while the CPU was fully loaded? . . .

I've come across the same issue while trying to max some more speed from the CPU-NB? . . . CnQ is disabled, I've manually set the CPU multi but while under extreme stress I've observed the processor multi dropping to x4 along with the vCore dropping approx 0.300v (1.500vCore >>> 1.200vCore) . . . interesting? . . . my first guess is perhaps the chip has exceeded some hardcoded thermal limits and is reducing speed to prevent possible damage? . . . anyone else notice this before (you have to keep a beady eye on CPU-z) . . . cheers in advance for any feedback! :)

Thanks Gareth . . . . doesn't look like that is the problem then (o.t AIIX4 chip btw) . . . not to worry I'll do a bit more trouble-shooting and see if anything turns up! :)

Just got the Phenom 2 955 with the corsair h50 water cooler so i gave it a shot in overclocking, just changed the Multiplier to x18.5 and its now running at 3.7GHz stable at around 50c ish on full load on prime 95, and at around 30 ish on idle (Left it on desktop with just windows running and no programs), and here are my results

Idle

Stressed with prime 95

well its quite warm yea as my mum likes the heating on, but thats 50 on Full load on prime and its an AMD so it is about right when you compare them with other people who have the 955 some have it at around 55 so 49-50 im happy with as its overclocked aswell

Hello lqfaint and welcome to the thread! :) . . . please read the welcome post and enjoy your stay! :D . . . nice set of results there and looks promising! . . . couple of points to mention, if possible it preferable to include the stability test in the screenie as well as the [Memory] tab from CPU-z and most importantly your name good sir! :D . . . if you manage to fit some star-wars theme in there also I would be extra happy! ;)

How long exactly have you had your new system? . . . would I be right you started overclocking it as soon as you powered it on? . . . 3.7GHz @ 1.392vCore seems good, did you adjust the vCore yourself or is that on [auto]?

eddiew.. i have a Thermalright Ultra-120A with 2 fans at 1000 rpm

plus the heats in my house are on

so i would have thought the H50 would be better performance than mime.

Hello and thanks for the welcome, i got my system from about a month now, and i only decided to overclock after i got my H50 which was few days ago, but how ever no i haven't touched any other settings except the Multiplier to 18.5 as i asked around few people told me that i shouldn't have to change any other settings if i only want to go up to 3.7 as its not a big change going up from 3.2. and i will be posting my Stability screens too later on today as i don't have time atm, have to go to college

and 1 more thing, you also have your NB runing at 2.6, does this make a difference like givving the CPU less hassle? and what motherboard you have as this aparantly makes a difference and mine is quite cheep one

lqfaint, it maybe better to manuelly set the vcore because u may get 3.7ghz stable on lower voltage..

overclocking the CPU-NB makes a good improvement to the L3 and ram latency..

my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
