AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Boots happily at TRC 40, eddyc, so I'm gonna call it quits at that if it works. Seriously doubt there's any real world difference that I'll see anyway.

And unlucky gareth, that's disappointing :( Have you considered RMAing it on the basis it doesn't do what it says on the tin?

i've already RMA'ed the ram, the replacements are slightly better as i can get:

1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2T 1.75v-1.8v - is stable
1333mhz 6-6-6-20 1T 1.75v - is stable

but tbh it's still not right as its not stable at stock settings

No, that doesn't seem very right... I wonder if memory manufacturers aren't getting a bit overoptimistic on what their kit will do. The BIOS defaults always seem a lot slacker than what's on the box; many users will never know that they aren't getting the "ultra tight timings" that were advertised :/

Hey gareth170, so the system that was stable, that became unstable is now stable again? :D . . . there's only two things that spring to mind . . . . a) I spoke with an electrician yesterday and asked him about your electric problem, he said to find out what DB you are using? (Distribution Board) and a bunch of other stuff that he wrote down but I can't understand his handwriting so will have to get back to you, find out your DB though . . . and b) Is there any chance either the memory sticks or the motherboard is overheating?, a fluctuation in temps could cause an error? . . . I've recently added some cooling for the motherboards PWM/Mosfets which were heatsink-less and it' appears to have sorted a few problems I was having? . . . so how is the cooling to both your motherboard and your ram? :)

hi Big.Wayne.basicly yeah, it was stable at 3.8ghz, then afew days later i tryed for 3.9ghz but that failed so i droped back down to 3.8ghz and i ran prime to make sure everything fine but it failed, but now it's stable .......

i will find out about the DB and i'll get back to you on that...

my motherboard temp is 37c underload so i don't think its that? the ram have they own heatsink thing on them...

i think the PWM/Mosfets as a hestsink on them? see below

motherboardproductimagey.jpg

as for airflow, i have a 38cm side fan intake , 25cm front fan intake, 17cm top fan blowing out, 12cm rear fan blowing out,

i admin the side panel isn't closed because my cpu cooler would hit the side fan, but the side fan is blowing slight at the whole motherboard..

also the cableing is at side of the motherboard not over it

Nice board gareth i have never used a gigabyte b4 but have always like the look of em whats it like? is the bios easy to nav?

I just realized that k10stat gives you a NB temp reading mine is showing 28c idle never knew it did that :)

liamcrane. yeah gigabyte boards are nice with nice features, the bios is easy to navigate...

as for NB temp reading , are u sure it's not reading the core temp or another temp. because i don't think these chips have cpu-nb temp sensor.

Hey Gareth, that looks like solid board! and combined with good case airflow it would seem indeed like everything is nice and cool . . . . although you say the mobo temp is 37°C that does not mean the whole mobo is 37°C, just the area around the sensor

On the ASUS mobo I am using this mobo-temp sensor is located just above the ram slots, I found this out by pointing a hairdryer (on cold blast) at different areas of the board until I saw the Hardware Monitor temp drop . . . with the cold blast of air directed at the sensor the temp dropped to 20°C although as said already this was just the local area and the rest of the board was burning hot in places . . . . combined with the fact that you are *not* using a downwards blowing heatsink fan and are overclocking a quad core I would say there is at least a small chance the PWM/Mosfets "could" be running a bit too hot? . . . I guess it depends what voltages are flowing . . . .

I know this may sound a bit abstract but sometimes to solve overclocking issues you have to keep an open mind and never right a possibility off until you have tested it . . . . It's only today that I added a fan to cool the power circuitry on my heatsinkless board but the difference it has made is very noticable . . . . that Trottling issue I mentioned a few days ago has gone away and I am now able to get the CPU-NB running faster, more stable and using much lower volts than when the PWM/Mosfets were running toasty! . . . and all that's changed is the cooling?

If it's not that then surely the RAM is playing up? . . . we got to get you sorted as this has been dragging on for weeks! :D

Big wayne i think if i remember rightly i have a similar board to you, i have the asus
m4a785d-m pro, its an ok board but does not really offer my cooling on the mosfits compared to something like gareth's board posted above, what was your opinion of the board? im thinking of upgrading mine but the idea of an am3 board means i need dd3 ram which is an extra cost, would you reccomend any am2+ boards that have good all round cooling?

I have been looking at this

Hi Liam, yeah I am using the ASUS M4A785D-M Pro! . . . how can you call it an "ok" board? . . . it's a "Superb" board heh! :p . . . . I'm sticking with DDR2 so I couldn't find anything better and to be honest at £57.95 it's a total steal! :)

I've had one or two "teething" problems but it's all fairly sorted now, dunno if you saw above I mentioned to Gareth that I added a 120mm fan to cool the PWM/Mosfets and that has worked wonders! :D

So why do you call it an "ok" board? . . . what problem did you have with it?

Big.Wayne. i have a Zalman ZM-MFC2 Multi Fan Controller with temp sensors, which i've put 3 on the motherboard, they say 25-27c, but i don't know if that true...

i'll look at the PWM/Mosfets ,

as for the ram, i have been having ram issues at stock settings but i've got around that for now.

Thanks for the quick reply wayne :) i have never had a prob with the board if im honest like you say its always been stable, i just have a few problems trying to find settings in the bios to change cpu-nb voltage and multi as well as HT voltage and multi they are all worded in a strange way to me lol im just prob being dum but just wary of changing the wrong setting :D.

I like your idea of the mosfets cooling, most boards these days seem to come with heatsinks covering them but thats the only downside to this board i guess, what are the mosfets exactly and what do they do?

i need to get to work on overclocking my asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3 & 965be, really lol

the first move i made towards that was chucking the standard cooler in a drawer and using my scythe ninja mina instead (sadly just about the biggest heastink i can fit on my case :p). the fan on that standard cooler is annoyingly whiney

Liam: Yes a lot of more expensive ££ boards include a PWM/Mosfet heatsink although depending on the level of overclock/voltage being used even these "heatsinked" boards sometimes need additional cooling . . . I'm amazed I got this far without cooling mine! :o

So how long have you owned that board? I got mine Nov last year and I'm just now sussing it out after 4-5months! ;) . . . I think the BIOS is awesome, never seen so many useful BIOS options in a board of this price . . . . All the BIOS options make sense to me? . . . here is my BIOS settings from a few days ago, could it be anymore simple! :p

Hello james.miller and welcome to the thread! :) . . . please read the "Welcome Post" and preferably the whole thread! ;) . . . looks like you got some uBer kit there . . . couldn't be any easier for you man . . . just play with the CPU Multi and the vCore! . . . your appointed Deneb 965 guide is gareth170, hes the man!
