AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

alexhull24. not really, but the IMC is rated at 1333mhz so i would say get a good 1333mhz set with low Latency.

many people have problems with 1600 ram as most won't be stable at that...

also the 965BE as unlocked multipler so it won't matter to the ram.

Thanks, I thought 1600MHz would have been better. I've never clocked an AMD chip to date so bear with me. Do you mean the Phenom will have to reach a high clockspeed to allow 1600MHz ram to work properly?

Just thought I'd let people know, my BSOD issues are down to an OS/HDD/Driver or SATA controller issue, I put my spare 80gb IDE hard drive in and I ran memtest for 6 hours and prime 85 for 4 hours with no errors on either.

Time to reinstall windows again. This will be the third install on this computer, I only built it in October! :(

Aww nuts, just as I was all happy with my modest OC, I went and put another 4GB of memory in.

Naturally, everything is busted now. I remember with my old C2D that I had to severely ramp up the latencies to get 4 sticks going, alas, it looks like my P2 isn't any better in that regard :(

Finally priming again at 1600MHz, duel channel, unganged, 10-10-10-26, 1.66v.

Can't seem to get CPU-NB to budge up from 2000MHz, with it set to 2400 in bios CPU-Z just reports default speed. Upping HT speed from stock just prevents POST and requires a CMOS reset :(

Is it possible that by upping my CPU-NB and HT voltage (currently 1.2v and unknown) I might get my old speeds and timings back? If so, what's the sensible voltage ranges?

I know I'll never really feel the difference, but it's an aesthetic thing :P

uh-oh - not what I wanted to hear dude!
Just made plans to drop off and purchase another set of 4Gb RAM to whack into mine too tommorow!

Luckily mine is working ok so far @ 3.8 2000/2000 with 4Gb @ DDR3-1600 so hopefully I shouldn't fear losing anything.

Will let you know how it goes - now wheres my darn X6 cpu to finish it all off :)

aye i was just gunna say - The extra strain should be on the IMC NOT on the memory - so upping either the CPU volts or CPU-NB volts should help (as opposed to slackening mem timings even more) to get it stable

Cool, I'll just hoik it up as long as it's not getting too hot then :)

*edit* those extra ram sticks really do seem to have borked my ability to up the frequency though; even AOD says target 2400, but current 2000 :( Dunno if that's a motherboard/BIOS thing?

Hooray! With a CPU-NB of 1.3v she has finally booted at 9-9-9-24, good as she's ever done :D

Also found a setting for base clock, turned from auto to manual, and magically my NB is at 2400MHz. Even though auto was exactly the same...

To the prime-o-tron!

*edit* Fail. 2400 wouldn't stick. After a reboot, it was back to default. Now trying 2200... :/

just had my extra 2 x 2gb delivered.

Works like a charm even though they are a different version number (same memory sticks though).

All picked up at default DDR3-1600mhz 9-9-9-24/[email protected] (stock rating for these modules)

HTT and CPU-NB still @ 2000 - don't really see that much benefit in disturbing it as some sandra tests I did a couple of days ago proved minimal gains by upping the CPU-NB/HTT. Now thats in sandra bear in mind ;)

lol - but saying all that Windows Performance Index dropped on both CPU and memory - but upped my graphics as follows:
CPU: 7.5 down to 7.4
Memory: 7.6 down to 7.5
Graphics 1: 7.7 up to 7.8
Graphics 2: 7.7 up to 7.8
Hard disk: 7.6 same

wierd- will run some sandra mem benches to compare once i've checked its 100% prime stable.

Glad to hear it zoomee - I think you chose good memory too, which I imagine helps a lot.

My new stuff is some nice Ripjaws, proper latency settings all the way up to 800MHz :) But alas, I also have some OCZ gold which only has timings up to 609MHz despite being sold as DDR3-1600! Rotten trick, tbh :(

Still, [email protected] (lol, my mobo can only do 0.02v increments) for all 8 gig feels reasonable, so I like you shall be happy with my mahoosive memory capacity :D I guess P2's are a step up on my old C2D after all, that had to go up about 30% on all latencies to handle 4 sticks!

lol - I just went for the cheapest DDR3-1600Mhz kit I could find when I initially bought my PC - they were only £98 then - had to pay £108 for the same kit now! Saying that its still slightly cheaper than buying a full 8Gb kit!

CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.65V (2Kits)

They were branded only core i5 compatible but were on my motherboards QVL list so got them anyway. If I'd have known about the ripjaws your using I would have got them as they have slightly lower latency for 1600Mhz (8-8-8-somat, instead of my 9-9-9-24)
I bought them knowing of the IMC's limit at 1333 and thought I'd risk it as I overclock them to 1600mhz....But am glad i can just set them to ddr1600 in bios - i'll be happy once prime blend finishes 24hrs :)

Others please bear in mind that older IMc's are limited to four banks at slower speeds - I think its only the C3 stepping's which introduced support for four banks @ 1333Mhz. I'm counting myself VERY lucky if I get these to run 1600Mhz with all stock settings (for ram only of course :P )

Hehe, well technically I think my 1.3v CPU-NB may still be an undervolt - I'm pretty sure it defaulted to the same as the core, i.e. 1.375 :)

If I'm right, then woohoo! If not, then meh, what the hell, it runs, it primes for a few hours, it stays under 60 degrees; that'll do donkey :D

You seem to be running just 2 sticks of memory? :) Yer, I was happily at 1.175v with 2x2GB.

...1.325v; 1.3 bluescreened 20 mins after I stopped Prime 95 on 4 hours.

Still, there ya have it folks: 2 sticks good, 4 sticks bad.
