Great to see Gibbo giving real positives AND negatives as well as his personal advise and not just saying "buy buy buy" really good to see and gets a big thumbs up from me :)

I'm really pleased with the price considering the performance! I wonder if Nvidia will lower prices now? a 780 is still a tempting prospect but only if its nicely cheaper than the 290x now.

**UPDATE**

Hynix and Elpida are both just as good as each other.

I took my Elpida card which could only do 5700MHz, flashed the Asus BIOS to it, pumped up the voltage and now the Elpida card is matching with 6600MHz. :)

So there you go, Elpida, Hynix, it don't matter. What matters is voltage control. ;)

Asus BIOS FTW. :D

By the way this is an R290 I've flashed with R290X BIOS, works a tread, but shaders not unlocked, but can now hit 1220 core and 6600 RAM on the regular R290 as well. At these speeds this also obliverates Titan. Incredible value!

This is a game changer in terms of price/performance!.. Thats if its in the £350-£380 bracket. Wow!

Very nice, ordered myself two :p

However, I will be wanting to put some custom cooling on there :p

I seriously distrust myself with anything water (poor old 6990...) so, hoping AC or someone will come out with compatables!

Would a i5 2500k at 4.6gig bottleneck one of these cards? or an sli 280x?

One R9 290X would be ok with your cpu.
a CROSSFIRE 280x would bottleneck a little bit, even with the bootleneck you will get more performance than one R9 290x

but all comes down to what resolution do you game.

Sli is for nvidia cards ;)
But as the others have said one should be fine, if you want to go crossfire then might be worth upgrading the CPU to i7 3770k(being a z77 chip set your mobo should support it).
