AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Bought a second vapour x but not installed it, seen a few comments saying with the mobo pcie slots so close together it makes the fans kick up a lot and its not that much quieter than the stock cooler. Cards still in its packaging, going back Monday. Just hope corsair release that hg10 bracket soon so I can get the reference board liquid cooled. Ah well, would have looked good if it would work =/

Try it man, it might be possible to overcome the heat with pci bracket removal and good placement of static pressure fans.

Nah its something akin to running 2 7990's in crossfire, 1 card dumping out the heat and the other sucking it in leading to it running hotter. Prefer to wait for the corsair bracket :) Really can't be bothered messing around with fans etc, had enough of that with the 7990.

I've created a fan curve in MSI AB to try and see if these issues I'm having with my card are VRM heat related, but it won't apply the curve. The fan speed just sits there at 25% regardless of the temp.

How did you set this?

Replace all my fans with the akasa piranha 120mm that were on offer for £5 recently. Can put both cards together and the temps are good playing witcher 2 which used to go into the 90s is siting at 83. That's with my cards at -31 voltage. It's a bit noisey but can't hear it while I'm gaming with the headphones in.

They're good fans for the price

I'm going to switch from a 780 soon to a 290, & I'm currently trying to decide between a Sapphire 290 Tri-X & the Powercolor 290 PCS+.

I was keen on the PCS+ over the Tri-X due to them perfoming the same cooling-wise + the backplate would save me buying one later from ColdZero, but I've just read through the thread on Overcock.net regarding issues with some PCS+ cards, which has put me off a bit.

Has anyone here that's bought one recently had any issues with their card?

i know there was a problem with OcUK's first batch in Jan as I remember the thread Gibbo started, which was resolved.

I'm just curious if similar issues are still hanging around even now.

I vote for the Tri-X, guaranteed to get Hynix memory too.

On another note I also came form a GTX 780 to a 290 ( I bought the Tri-X ) and was not disappointed, my GTX 780 was running a custom BIOS and 1.3Ghz with boost disabled and my 290 was faster at 1.2Ghz!!!!

Making the switch = + 100 man points.

+1 I'd also get the Tri-X for similar reasons, however the PCS is also a quality card and has some added benefits which definitely make it far from an easy choice.

The PCS has a backplate and very little chance of coil whine as the coils are glued. It has has an excellent cooler and has a fast turnaround RMA with OcuK.

powercolor pcs+ here and no issues so far, there was a bios update to resolve problems on the early cards though

Having made the switch myself I wouldn't bother unless you're wanting a new toy. Games are practically identical and FPS will be very close. 290 is a great card but it's only as great at the 780 is IMO.

Unfortunately AMDs driver support is still a bit lacking in some titles. Diablo 3 for example went from smooth to stuttery by swapping cards for me. I've not been able to fix it yet... it could just be that game making my comment wide of the mark though.

I'm doing it mostly for the mismatched monitor support AMD recently added as I run 1280+1920+1280, and waiting on NV adding similar support is getting long in the tooth.

Plus Elite Dangerous would be much better over 3 screens compared to just 1 :)

Ah fair enough that makes sense then. If you get a good sale on your 780 it can end up costing you net £0 which makes it OK but if you're switching for something in particular then you don't mind paying a little anyway. :)

Tri-X OC I have. It's a really nice card. I'd be more impressed with it if I didn't have a 780 prior but I have no real complaints about the card itself. Just minor gripes that my main game has started suffering. I'll fix it with a work around though somehow.

shouldnt be that way.
Never had any issue with d3.

Perhaps you're just used to it. It's only minor but now I've spotted it, it's unbearable.

And I trust myself to have the competence to double click a driver installer before someone tells me it's PEBKAC :p.

You use a lcd screen right?
they are inferior screens vs cathode screens CRT where screen clarity was superior, if you cant spot those differences you never would bought a lcd screen. worse quality and unbearable. much like people listening to 128kb mp3 and think flac quality sounds wrong. the industry moved into the worse directions and people accept that? now where is a brand new wp900 as for clarity of the screen I miss that a lot.

unless you can produce a video and point it out that is I assume its likely user error.
