AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Nothing in particular I just liked the Tri-X. Tbh for me I cannot tell any difference between a 970 & 290 when gaming so don't mind which I have.

You really have got the worse luck when it comes to GPU's!

What did you miss about the 290 trix compared to the 970?

I haven't had any strange colours yet....

The thing is, my issue happens even when I am not playing games, it can happen when PC is idle, watching a film via MPC-HC or just browsing and even worse, it is completely random, could happen 4 times a day or be fine for a few days or more and then boom, issue again :(

But I think you are right about the core clock fluctuation being the main cause of the problem.

Since doing those MSI afterburner tweaks (particularly the disabling the ULPS mode), I haven't had any issues *touch wood*

Have bookmarked that guide though just in case though.... thanks!

My luck hasn't been great, but I can tell you this 290 will be my last AMD card. They're shockingly unstable and IMO awful with lack of decent drivers.

Have you disabled hardware acceleration in your browser?

unstable ? come off it- maybe if you have a duff card but my 290 has been near flawless - even heavily overclocked, same as my 570/480 Nvidia cards-near flawless

Yes unstable!

The first reference died and was RMA'd back to Powercolours via Overclockers and after 45 days still nothing was heard after not being able to use it for any purpose.

The 2nd card was only stable once the core clock fluctuation was stopped by applying a RadeonPro profile to stop it.

That's what I call unstable and by definition is correct!

My MSI cards and Tri X cards have been brilliant. The only issue I had was with the temperatures of the MSI GE cards being high in well ventilated case but that was easily resolved by switching over to the Sapphire Tri X cards.

They're definitely far noisier but they're a lot cooler.

Having said that, if the new AMD cards aren't anything short of spectacular I'll be moving over to the green team next year.
It will be the first time in me doing so but I fancy a change and I more or less just built my rig for DA3 and The Witcher 3, with the latter being the main reason for me to switch over.

things happens, seen the coilwhine with 970 or the black screen with 290, some things can happen which might never happen to some computers or people for that matter.
I just think many take the easy way out when issues happens in both camps.
I talked to some about nvidia cards they never buy them due to all they had broke down but never had the issue with amd/ati cards.
etc..........

whenever they move away from reference design things can happen that amd cant be blamed nor Nvidia.

I take it a Corsair RM850 will cope ok with 2 290 Tri-X's?
They'll both be run at stock speeds with the following spec :

4770k @ 4.4ghz / 1.26v
2x4gb 2133mhz ddr3 / 1.5v
2 sata hd's & 2 sata 2 ssd's
5 140mm & 2 120mm fans
5-7 usb 2 devices

Yeah it should be no problem. I had that same setup and it pulled around 600W at the wall.

Fair enough! :)

I was tempted by the 970 but aside from temps and noise, it was a bit of a pointless move for myself + mantle is a god send for my rig when it comes to bf 4, dx just isn't playable.

Yeah, the 290's do seem to have a lot of problems :(

But tbf, it seems like the 970 has its fair share of problems atm too i.e. display driver stopped responding, a few cards dying already, coil whine for certain brands amongst a few other things.

I don't care about brand, I just want the best bang per buck and a card that won't give me troubles, which seems to be a lottery these days with both brands....

The situation is not great and while I'm not in a hurry to upgrade, the next upgrade may well be a flagship card. 980 would be great!

980 far too expensive for what it is imo. Much rather have 2x970's!

For myself, it will depend entirely on the choice & price of freesync and gsync 21.9 monitors.

edit:

and yes I did try disabling the hardware acceleration, made no difference except scrolling etc. super jerky :(

Your OVERCLOCKERS order will be delivered today by Butt, your DPD driver.

I expected him to be an ass, but he was actually nice and funny and especially for this time of the morning.

That's why even though i would like 4, i will settle for a minimum of 3 due to lack of space.

Understandable. Four is impossible on anything but water or the reference card. If you stick to air with three it could be tricky unless you've got your airflow and spacing sorted.
