You really have got the worse luck when it comes to GPU's!
What did you miss about the 290 trix compared to the 970?
I haven't had any strange colours yet....
The thing is, my issue happens even when I am not playing games, it can happen when PC is idle, watching a film via MPC-HC or just browsing and even worse, it is completely random, could happen 4 times a day or be fine for a few days or more and then boom, issue again
But I think you are right about the core clock fluctuation being the main cause of the problem.
Since doing those MSI afterburner tweaks (particularly the disabling the ULPS mode), I haven't had any issues *touch wood*
Have bookmarked that guide though just in case though.... thanks!
unstable ? come off it- maybe if you have a duff card but my 290 has been near flawless - even heavily overclocked, same as my 570/480 Nvidia cards-near flawless

I take it a Corsair RM850 will cope ok with 2 290 Tri-X's?
They'll both be run at stock speeds with the following spec :
4770k @ 4.4ghz / 1.26v
2x4gb 2133mhz ddr3 / 1.5v
2 sata hd's & 2 sata 2 ssd's
5 140mm & 2 120mm fans
5-7 usb 2 devices
Nothing in particular I just liked the Tri-X. Tbh for me I cannot tell any difference between a 970 & 290 when gaming so don't mind which I have.
My luck hasn't been great, but I can tell you this 290 will be my last AMD card. They're shockingly unstable and IMO awful with lack of decent drivers.
Have you disabled hardware acceleration in your browser?
Yeah, the 290's do seem to have a lot of problems
But tbf, it seems like the 970 has its fair share of problems atm too i.e. display driver stopped responding, a few cards dying already, coil whine for certain brands amongst a few other things.
I don't care about brand, I just want the best bang per buck and a card that won't give me troubles, which seems to be a lottery these days with both brands....
The situation is not great and while I'm not in a hurry to upgrade, the next upgrade may well be a flagship card. 980 would be great!
Your OVERCLOCKERS order will be delivered today by Butt, your DPD driver.
I expected him to be an ass, but he was actually nice and funny and especially for this time of the morning.3x MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
Time for an upgrade from your 3x7950's mate?
Butt?
Indeed and the same price i paid for the MSI 3x7950's
Nice and good price on those cards too. Three cards is definitely the sweet spot having spent time using two, three and now four card setups.
That's why even though i would like 4, i will settle for a minimum of 3 due to lack of space.
Three, non ref cards is pretty brave tbh.
