Bloomin eck... Bit of a palava just to get it running normally.
Fairly sure I had that fluctuating clock thing at one point, though I'm not sure if it was just AB giving false reports or not.
I don't have that issue now, and *I think* unified monitoring was what sorted it.

Didn't recommend it before as I thought it only applied to multi-gpu setups.

Then again, my memory isn't what it was and I could be imagining the whole thing :o

Interesting. I did have the issue at one point as well, but not recently. I think low load games where gpu usage is low exacerbates the problem. Trying to help recreate it so it can be fixed at driver level without the need for RadeonPro to stop the core clock dropping.

Enable unified gpu usage monitoring snips in afterburner. That stops the wild gpu usage fluctuations. Wonder if that will help your other issue too.

I find it bizarre that you need +13mv for that clock when i was using -0.037v with that card 24/7. What's also weird is the stock clocks for it our 975/1250, not 947/1250. Have you flashed a different bios?

Nope, all I've done it plug it in an use it - well to a degree ;) :p

I've given snips some more suggestions. He has overdrive, RadeonPro and afterburner all wrestling for control over his 290. Lets see if my advice to keep overdrive locked, use afterburner to manage fan speeds and use RadeonPro to fix clock dropping in low load games, works.

Shame I'm working, I'd rather be trying to get this sorted :(

I must admit though, I only added the +13mv in the hope it would fix the issue so maybe it is stable at 0.0 or even -0.037mv - which I've not tested. I will go through the DDU process again tonight after a system restore and test using stock everything, bar the fan profile. I've managed to get Friday off, so crossing my fingers to get this sorted!!! Last weekend before the wife & son are back.

Now having more problems with my 290...

Previous issue

Last week, my blue screening started to happen again so it seems like the atikmdag.sys reg file fix was only a temporary solution, no problems for about 3 months.... and as usual, completely random, doesn't matter what usage or what time, it will either happen 4 times a day, once a day or maybe be fine for a few days or be fine for 3 months....

I tried everything that was suggested on multiple forums before I found the above "supposed" fix:

- windows reinstall (W8.1 64 bit)
- reinstalled motherboard BIOS, reset to default settings
- tried different PCI slots
- tried different AMD drivers (done a full driver wipe etc.)
- tried upping the power control for the 290 via AMD overdrive and MSI afterburner

Tested my memory with memtest the other day, no errors found.

Thankfully, it seems like I am not the only one with this problem, hundreds of other people experiencing the same:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=b...me&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=0xa0000001+and+AMD+290

So after some more searching in the last day or two, supposedly the 14.7+ August drivers have fixed the issue.

I have now put the latest 14.9 drivers on in hope that this will be the "magic bullet"

New issue - AMD display driver has stopped responding

Fine when it happens in windows as it can recover most of the time but during a game or watching a film, I have to restart the PC.

I have tried the newest 14.9 drivers and the even newer 14.9 beta drivers but it still happens.

Once again, the issue is completely random.

Any last ideas?

Can anyone recommend a custom cooler for the 290 that's easy to fit for a novice and drops volume/temps. More interested in dropping volume, I can live with reference cooler but it does get pretty noisy without headphones on

Just got my MSI R9 290 Gaming today, quite happy with it so far it's a nice improvement from my HIS IceQ 7950, but just getting a feel for overclocking it - I sort of knew my old cards limits so feels weird tweaking again.

I did a couple of benchmark runs, did a stock run in Heaven 4.0 and got I think 1306 on 1080p custom extreme setting, and on Valley I tried standard which was 2455, then tried undervolted (by -19mv) overclock to 1100/1300 and scored 2600+ (didn't save the score though). Do those scores seem OK with CPU in sig? Also temps were max 80 Celcius dead on with overclock, and 78 Celcius at stock is that fine?

Are there any obvious tweaks I should do? Thanks for any info, the thread is so long it would take me ages to skim through it all! :D

EDIT: Also another thing, how accurate is the GPU-Z VDDC Power in reading? Getting 213w max with 1100Mhz overclock, so seems like it should be fine on my 550w Seasonic gold G-Series along with the rest of my system, was curious if it would be OK but no problems so far.

g10 kraken with watercooling kit
that would be my choice.

Or go for the Arctic Accelero Xtreme 4 or the Accelero Hybrid 2. You need lots of clearance around your card (front and back for the Xtreme, just back for the Hybrid) but both will keep a card very cool and near silent. Just be aware that the backplate takes up very slightly more than 1 PCI slot space - my CPU cooler was so tight to the first slot on my motherboard that it didn't fit once the first GPU had the backplate on it. Shouldn't be the case for 99% of people, but just wanted to mention in case you're in the 1%.

That said, love these coolers! Almost silent and the most I've hit under load on either card is 68C since I found the best places for my radiators. :)

I missed my Tri-X after selling it and going 970. So I bought another one.... :)

Hoping it lasts longer than the 3 days the 970 managed. It has an ASIC of %87 on this one...

Bad RAM on the card giving out errors and crashing the display driver.

I have tried one last thing and if this doesn't fix the issue then I will be RMA'ing it.

Got afterburner installed now and have:

- disabled ULPS
- enabled unified GPU usage metering
- set power limit to 20%

Appears to be a common issue which is resolved using RadeonPro and creating a profile for each game you play to force it to use max clocks.

I had this issue with all games I was playing. Black screen, strange colours and I did everything and nothing worked.

I followed THIS guide to create a profile in RadeonPro and I've not had an issue since. Apparently this is an issue which is being fixed on a driver level and its caused by the core clock fluctuation in-game.

You really have got the worse luck when it comes to GPU's!

What did you miss about the 290 trix compared to the 970?

I haven't had any strange colours yet....

The thing is, my issue happens even when I am not playing games, it can happen when PC is idle, watching a film via MPC-HC or just browsing and even worse, it is completely random, could happen 4 times a day or be fine for a few days or more and then boom, issue again :(

But I think you are right about the core clock fluctuation being the main cause of the problem.

Since doing those MSI afterburner tweaks (particularly the disabling the ULPS mode), I haven't had any issues *touch wood*

Have bookmarked that guide though just in case though.... thanks!
