AMD Radeon 12.2 Video Card Drivers Now Available

Thankfully ive never had any problems with ATI drivers, going back to the 1900XT all the way to my current setup, would love to know what causes these issues ?

Enthusiasts like to mess around with the OS too much, turn off this and that, install hacks, registry cleaners ect, driver cleaners.. without knowing the possible initial and long term consequences.

Having 2or3 3rd party GPU OCing apps like AB,Trixx and RacerX even at the same time.

i find quite strange when i updated latest driver and checked latest version and showed as 12.3 as i thougt it was 12.2.... something wrong is it?

When I play bf3 I have to have A.I turned off or the game crashes with a bsod on the game loading. is there a driver to allow me to run the card with the A.I turned on so I can make the most of my card. its a 4870x2 window 7 64 bit

I found when I installed these OVER the 12.1 or 11.x's, you get all sorts of weird problems, one is error messages on startup... however, do the uninstall of CCC correctly then use Atiman to uninstall all the remaining ATi drivel, reinstall, they're fine.

Don't do shortcuts and install over existing drivers with ATi, they're ****ing useless and it screws your system up. Uninstall CCC first as normal, then use Atiman to do the rest, couple of reboots and job done. Also, don't forget to put the 12.2 CATS on as well!

Never had any problems at all installing straight over the top of the previous driver as that is what AMD designed them to do (i am on 12.2 installed over the top of 12.1 and not one problem). I have however had problems in the past when using driversweeper and other programs that have deleted stuff they should not have. Just because one person has problems does not mean every other person will so i would say that you should install the driver as intended - over the top. Sometimes after the first re-boot CCC does not start for me so i have to re-boot once more and then it is fine. If you do still have problems then i would use the uninstall function on the latest AMD driver installer.

Source on the "installing straight over the top of the previous driver as that is what AMD designed them to do" claim.

It's BS, AMD recommends to uninstall previous drivers before any drivers upgrade since CCC packages contain more than just drivers.

Not only that, wonder around some other forums like Guru3d and you'll see what AMD reps recommend.

I used to install drivers over the top but that way doesn't get rid of the old drivers, is prone to problems, often won't work for Crossfire users and warrants lesser performance over time.

You should also reference the page that links to that one Mr Krugga :)

3. Upgrade an old driver to the latest version from AMD.COM

  • Note! Before getting started, ensure that you know the model of your graphics card. It will come in handy for several steps in the process. Refer to Article GPU-55 for information on how to identify your graphics card
  • Verify that the operating system has the latest service packs / updates
  • Download the latest drivers for the graphics card from AMD’s Graphics Drivers & Software page. Refer to Article GPU-56 for information on how to use the graphics driver utility
  • Remove any pre-existing drivers / software for the graphics card. Refer to Article GPU-57 for detailed instructions on how to uninstall old drivers
  • Install the latest drivers for the graphics card. For detailed instructions on how to install the latest graphics drivers, refer to:

The installer removes the drivers and replaces them with the new ones in Vista/7, why do you think the screen goes blank and the remove hardware sound plays.

Heh and yes it may work fine for most (I tend to do it) but its not the way advised by the manufacturer, so if you get problems doing it that way you know why.

QQ, anyone have any ideas why ccc seems to be spinning the CPU at 20% even when the PC is relatively idle (i.e. surfing, doing mail etc)?

Sorry if i have this wrong but i thought we were talking about installing drivers not uninstalling as that link is for "how to uninstall drivers" and is an old link on how to uninstall Ati GPU drivers (my 6950 is an AMD card so that is how old that link is).

I have followed this link

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticle...tallationInstructionforMicrosoftWindows7.aspx

-which is how to install drivers on windows 7 (including updating the CCC (which includes the latest driver) from a previous version)

this article clearly says

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to install the AMD Catalyst Software on a system running Microsoft Windows7. The following reasons are why a customer should consider installing the AMD Catalyst Software:

*A later version of the AMD Catalyst software is required to take advantage of new AMD Catalyst features or updates.

Sorry if i am wrong but i (with just a single 6950) have never had a problem with installing over the top of the previous driver and the performance of the card has been just as it should be. I have however heard all the stories of people using registry cleaning software that has messed up the drivers. I think i will continue installing straight over the top until i get problems (About 14 months so far without problems when updating every month).

Heh, we aren't saying you can't do that, we are just saying that the manufacturer advises to remove the old driver first, so advising someone to do it any other way isn't a great idea. Heck I do the same as you with Nvidia cards. This is my first AMD card for a while and I was switching from Nvidia to AMD so my path was even more convoluted, but didn't involve driver cleaners etc. Just common sense. :)

But anyway, here's what I mean, lets go looking for the latest drivers and start from there.

Go to the latest version on the AMD site here

Where it says: AMD Radeon™ Desktop Video Card Drivers click on the link to the 64 or 32bit drivers of choice. e.g. 64 bit Windows Vista/Windows 7

You will come to the black ATI RAdeon Video Card Drivers page, click on the Release Notes

Scroll all the way down to the bottom to where it says "How to Install Your AMD Product." click on it.

Now you will want to "Choose the section that best matches your situation" which would be:

3. Upgrade an old driver to the latest version from AMD.COM

Read to your hearts content.. please take note of point d. :)

Nice one Biff, next time i have any problems with any driver installs i may try following that article that is dated 9/28/2010 (even though i don't own an Ati graphics card). But until then i will just keep installing over the top.

When i install new drivers "over the top" it asks me if i wan't to

1) Install or
2) Uninstall

so why have AMD added an Uninstall option on the CCC install set-up? According to your old Ati article you have to go through "ye olde remove programs and features" in the control panel which, according to your article, just then takes to a very old version of an Ati driver install program which is now included in new AMD driverinstall programs. So with that in mind i think i will stick to good old fashoined common sense and use my noggin instead of 2 year old Ati articles (why would the newer article state that you just install the new version of CCC without un-installing the old version first?).

Who knows why they do the things they do Kingy old chap, its a mystery to all and sundry... thats why I précised my summary with a get out clause for you :) (and me)

But there are many "oh ATI/AMD drivers are poopypants" and "Nvidia drivers cause death by chocolate" type whinings, and although perhaps you and I and some others of us who do the naughty installoverthetopandtohellwithyoumrsjones type procedures, I think that its fair to say that some people might have more luck doing it the old fashioned way.

True, maybe it's time for AMD/Ati/whatevertheywanttobecalled to have an overhaul of the website and update all the "articles". Maybe i am being a bit negative but the whole look of the website, to me, looks ancient. When they post the new drivers up and add that link to the old "articles" just seems like a lazy kind of - well we have to put this link up cos we can't be bothered to tell you what you should do and we can't be bothered to update an article from 2010. No wonder AMD get a bad reputation when it comes to driver reliability when they can't even have clear and concise instructions. They should point out on the main driver page that you have to un-install any previous driver before installing the new driver and not click here then go here then click on subsection d which will tell you something confusing!

But then again, if they did that i would not be here typing this at 12.23am :D
