Amd Radeon next move?

What I have noticed with the new NVidia cards is

The drivers need tweaking for 3 way SLI as the 980s should win easy in the thread I posted earlier and will in due time when NVidia get the drivers sorted.

I have also noticed a drop off in performance on some of the reviews when games use max settings @1080p and 1440p, it is not the end of the world as the 980 is still at least as fast as a 780ti in the worst cases. I think this could be due to the 256bit bus having to work harder when the game settings are maxed.

What I would like to see is a review with 3 or 4 of these cards using very high settings @4K, I know that the cards are not really targeted at this but it will show how much of a problem the 256bit bus is.

I think the 4k bench might show a drop off but it will be intresting because in theory more pixels on screen in same games will mean more blocks of similar colour which should help the compressions ??

Kaap i cannot speak for three-way but im not that impressed with the 980 either. A trend i have noticed is that when you look at reviews of fps, There is a very steady climb down with price v performance. For example the 770 and 970 are not huge amounts behind the 780 980 etc.

But they seem to cost a LOT more. Which is why i thought the 770 SLI seemed to put AMD in the shade. Maybe 3 way they still own but in two way they get demolished now. Even with the 256bus there is 60fps in 5670x1080 with 4xMSAA on BF4! :o

And that costs £528 or so delivered? With two games to sell on the MM? Hell AMD are so far out now that even if i wanted too i couldnt use a 295 or 290x CF, Because i never envisaged needing a kilowatt psu. Even Titan Black at £599 which is missing for some reason gets destroyed. As someone asked me a few posts up where is Titan? I have no idea but it is pretty far behind that is or sure.

You get games with the 900 series?

Yea i guess everyone is busy now to do 3 and 4 way i guess. A lot of time and effort and hardware for a few people. I still have a lot of reading to do to be fair and the dust needs to settle so we can see clearly.

Like for example i still presumed there was games on offer. But again the hype train is going a bit too fast because i realise now that was only for the 700 series and Titans so really when you think about it 980 costs a bit more than 780ti when you realise the value of Borderlands 2 and Watchdogs.

It's coming and it's 500mm^2+ on 28HPM.

The problems?

1) Watercooled + huge power consumption
2) Only coming in H1 2015
3) likely going to be facing GM200 instead of GM204.

Anyway high end isn't really AMD's issue. They've gotten used to giving high end away to NV many times. The problem is that they need a product that they can play the price war game with. That super big chip isn't going to save them from the $329 GTX 970.

With NV's lower die size, lower bus width and lower power GPUs beating AMD's chips it's actually nvidia that's in a better position to play the price game. Terrible news for AMD considering that Nvidia seems to have started right away and even worse is that it's pretty much confirmed that a 10SMM GTX 960 will launch next month making life really difficult for Tonga chips.

Basically what it boils down to is that Nvidia is either forcing AMD to take a marketshare hit or a huge hit to their margins. And again that huge watercooled chip isn't going to change this fact. What AMD needs is cards that are cheaper to make and faster than NV's stuff.

Number 3 on your list is the big one, I have been impressed by the efficiency and low TDP of these new GM204 cards and the amount of performance too. I don't know how far NVidia want to push it for the GM200 but scaling up the GM204 gives them the option to produce something with a huge increase in performance. Imagine a chip with double the transistors of the GM204 but on 20nm.

Nothing, further price drops on the 290/X.

But personally i think the 970 / 980 is a blessing in disguise.
For the first time in a while Nvidia have better GPU's for less money, this should be a wakeup call to AMD to stop pussyfooting around at the edges...

Maybe now we will see that stacked Vram thats been talked about for too long, along with other cool stuff....

I think AMD will just put up with the situation while they work on a response, that response i think will come in the form of the first 20nm or even 16nm GPU's depending when 20nm/16nm goes into mass production at Global Foundries and / or Samsung.

In the mean time i think AMD should concentrate on Free-Sync, Mantle V2, adding all the requested features to Catalyst Control Centre and redesigning its dated looks to something much more modern.

By the time all that is done it should be about time for me to upgrade my GPU again. :)

From past experiance AMD will pull something out the bag! ;)

They maybe feeling a little battered and bruised now, but they will sort it and thats what I like strong competition, its good for us all! :D

Totally agreed. Would love to see some design updates to Catalyst controls rather icky UI. So much could be done with it. I think AMD have turned a corner and a refresh on things like the UI would really set the path for whats to come.

As a designer I kinda think there lots in that area that AMD could improve on, but really want to see Mantle develop as well.. Exciting times ahead me thinks. I also don't think AMD should rush anything — take their time and do it right.

I hope AMD bring out a monster of a GPU aimed at what will be the 980 ti/titan 2 card we all know will hit at some point!

Really? He's not allowed to post in nvidia threads? Or you joking?

Not allowed to post in Nvidia threads and since becoming AMD Rep he's posted hardly anything in their threads either.

Go figure...

Please welcome our UK ocuk amd rep.

We set him as a vendor rep to ensure who is posting within vendor rep rules and as such LTMatt can now only post in threads or make threads about AMD hardware, he is now no longer allowed to comment on NVIDIA hardware in any way shape or form now is has Vendor Rep status.

Would I rather, post in any thread or only amd threads or be working getting paid for doing something i really into.

I think I know what matt would pick.

They are not really pushing the settings but looking at the figures at 4K resolution the 980s in quad sli look a bit slower than the Titans or 290Xs.

Memory bandwidth dude, they might be able to tweak it a little through the drivers but I think bandwidth will ultimately hold it back.

What's going to make me laugh is when amd mantle is the major player and direct x dies out. A 980 would make a good paper weight. Expensive one though :D

AMD have had it for this year lets wait till next year now, because they'll deffo bounce back but what it does mean is:-

AMD's prices will have to be much lower to compete.............GOOD, this means next years dual card will need be about 750 quid new ! ...........and not over a thousand like it was.

by next year this 980 will be stale.... old news... well, it's not that exiting anyway is it

So you feel Direct X will die off? What will the majority of GPU owners use if that happens because at the last count, I believe nVidia had over 60% share in the discrete GPU market and I doubt very much that games companies can make a profit with 60% of gamers cut off.
