*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

Heaven gives higher GPU temps for me than any game does...

The reference cooler from what I've seen is fine at stock, it's just no use at all for running the card maxed out.

Yeah fair point. I can think of a few examples where i get higher temps while gaming but on the whole i suppose it does give higher temps because of the gpu's at 99% usage pegged.

How many times have you posted that Linus review now Boom? Seems it's that or Furmark benchmarks are your go-to posts now.

Firstly that's a different video, secondly the pictures and stuff are just a bit of fun, mainly between me and LTMatt, and a few others like just for a bit of fun. You don't need to get so serious about stuff.

Most will agree the stock cooler is awful, and not really worthy of such a high end card that costs £400+, thing is people are getting touchy about it.. Bit weird, but you pays your money and you makes your choice. Personally someone is not planning water cooling, I would wait until non reference coolers appear, their will be a dramatic drop in temps you just wait. Early buyers could feel annoyed, but hey let's just pretend 95c is fine :p

Anand pulled them up on the Cooler, its the same one as the reference 7970, its weedy and pathetic.

It will be much better with proper 3'rd party cooler on it, less throttling to so they should score even higher in benchmarks.

Fantastic card, let down by its reference cooler, its worth getting a £30 after market air cooler for it.

Didn't AMD make a big song and dance earlier in the year about the need for them to improve the coolers on their high-end stuff?

Then they release a card which is extremely hot (it might be designed to run hot, but it is hot nonetheless) with the same blower cooler they have been using for past 5 years or so???

I've got Crysis 3 but still haven't had the will to finish Crysis 2 yet :)

If they do give higher temps fair enough, but that's still going from 85-95C to 50-60C.

I'm not saying it's bad at all. It's a great drop :)

Believe me, I've been there and done that with aftermarket aircooling vs reference. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

I can see where he;'s coming from Boom, you have posted that Linus review over and over and over again, you have also spend the past week spamming these threads with endless R9 290X heat pictures, its just insane.

Yea when something beats Nvidia so badly the end is near and the world is ending. Looking at this for example I can understand those guys especially when mantle is soon out also all their reasoning wont make sense then.

Its called denial and buyers remorse.

Well they did add some go faster stripes an turn the fan down to make less noise..

Not really good enough on £400+ card. Non reference cards will be awesome. Those on the fence, should just wait or invest in H20.

flopper you don't really help the situation with your pro AMD posts.

It doesn't beat nvidia so badly and it's hardly buyers remorse when he could sell the 780 quite easily and pay next to nothing for a 290X if he wanted to.

The temperature spam is just annoying though.

As i predicted a long time ago. The 290X will pull away as the resolution and details increase. It was the same for 7950/70 vs 670/680 and it will now be the same for 290/290x vs 780/Titan. Its all about the bus size at the end of the day. That only starts making a difference at 1440p or higher. I can't even see this trait changing until both sides refresh their cards on 20mm.

Exactly Suarez, for me the ref 290X just isn't worth it. If I thought it was great I would buy it. that's the things the flamers forget. I have AMD cards, I buy the ones I like. 290X is to hot, to loud.

Waiting to see what Gigabyte come up with, non ref, PCB or 780ti. Tbh prob none of these cards worth getting over my 780. 28nm has almost reached it's limits where adding more cores just limits overclocking. I'm just telling it how it is, no need for people to get upset.

How many times I have wanted AMD to do well, in GPU / CPU. Look at my threads ffs. Just people are really defensive about AMD, to the point where it doesn't make sense.

95c is to hot lol. It needs a better cooler, that's quieter.

Huh? Discredit it...

What was wrong with that review, Linus talks about overclocking being limited due to heat, watercoolers don't need to fear reference cards, but those who like to overclock on air should wait for non reference cards.

He also says it's the price VS performance king, and recommends it. What more do you want?

To many touchy feely people here :p, it's a GPU not your girlfriend. Weirdly sensitive about AMD.

Weirdly sensitive. More like deliberately stirring. And thanks, I'm married

It's already pointed out that the Linus review was biased due to overclocking, yet you post it up so casually like the whole thing was is fact without making any explanation at all when posting.

I'm not sensitive in any regard at all, I just don't like misinformation being spread round like cow manure. I don't give a damn about brand, just about performance/price/temp/power etc.. i.e. the facts. Try doing the same.

Your sticky out tongue on every discrediting comment doesn't mean it's ok to post it.

It's not that people are upset with what you're saying. They're just sick of hearing it from you on every bloody thread!! We know it's hot and loud!! we know! so were my 480s before i put them under water! big deal!

It's not just the AMD lads who are sick of you repeating the same garbage either, a few of the lads that would be seen as pro nvidia have also said so! and it's a credit to them for saying so!

The people who post on this forum are not noobs they know how to remove a crappy cooler and replace it with a custom one or waterblock for christ sake!

Almost Every AMD user you would consider "loyal" agrees the reference cooler is not good enough and have said so, Boomstick, we don't need to hear it from one member 200 times over and over during what has already been a one week period. its just hyperbolic insanity.

+1

(You would think he was going for MM access or something lol)

I feel stupid asking, but I just received my Gigabyte R9 290X but my CD/DVD drive is broke. Would anyone be able provide me with the CD data or a link to where I can download it? I can't find the driver anywhere

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

That's the drivers etc. The CD/DVD (not sure what other software is on there?)

I would use the customer service section on the forum bud :-)
