*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

To be clear it looks like the 290x consumes a lot of watts of power and doesn't vent outside the case well so it will heat the inside of the case more than other single gpu cards

AMD says it does. But Anand say they're just benching the on rails post. They don't themselves say that's the case. At least not in that post from you. :)

EDIT: looked at another:

4% difference

I was only taking issue with 16% not the it's faster part.

I'll let you off then Rusters. ;)

My point is or was, only at anand do we have a 780 besting a 290X. (quiet mode) As an example. ( i hope you appreciate the time i spent collecting these :D) no doubt there is more and some i missed, but i made my point.

My original point was the Anand bench is a poor example. Looks elsewhere for the real picture and a proper representation of performance in BF3. All the anand bf3 benchmarking procedure does is inflate Nvidia scores considerably more than AMD. See my first post further back for why this happens.

People need to work on their graph design. My eyes burned clicking that spoiler button :D.

Overall in BF3 it just looks pretty even experience to me.

IMO the 290X is made by its price. Performance depends what people can run them at for 24/7 gaming (i.e. Factoring heat and noise) because 780s and Titans will comfortably sit on 1200+/1700 for gaming and not get hot or loud.

For WC lads though these look very nice.

Lol. ^ Graphs!!

On the stock cooler the titan looks hot and loud to me, just not as hot or as loud as the 290X. :D

Few questions to those of you who have the card already:
1. OCuk stated PSU requirement at 750W+. Can I use this card on 750W 80+ gold PSU, together with water cooling and I7-4770K, oc'ed to 4.2-4.4? Or should I be looking at PSU upgrade as well?
2. How long/tall is this card, with stock cooler stripped and if anyone already have the EK block on it, how long/tall is it then? There is no info here at OCuk unfortunately.

Cheers

I think some are using older nvidia drivers, potentially 327.24's? The latest 331.58 are the set to be using and I've only seen the guru3d review stating they are in fact using those. Regardless I think on average the 290X is in-between Titan and 780 for the most part and at £440 is a great price.

However it's probably going to be closer to £470 once non-ref designs come out as unless you're going down the water route the stock cooler doesn't seem adequate.

So, thinking more long term (say 3 years), would I be better off sticking with GTX 670 SLI, or going with something like this? Considering it would probably still end up costing me, selling the 670's and getting one of these. Also, my cards are silent, and boost around 1200 core.

Game on both 2560x1440 and 1080.

You'll be more than fine.

Card uses a tad less than 300w at max worst case, CPU uses 150w max worst case, other components around 100 max worst case..

Even these are high estimates. You'd be fine with a 600w.

2. I can't answer sorry.

If you want the best bag for your buck then get the R290X which will also function as a heater :p

Indeed, so that might be fixed eventually. But looking at power consumption figures on low-load tasks is just looking for faults, only the max(load). really matters for heat etc.

Seriously the difference is just a pound or two in a year in regards to costs. Guru3d calculates these in their reviews.

Some things may not matter for you but for me and vice versa. I don't own a TV or cable/sat.dish etc. I watch everything of my PC - movies and Netflix. And that's on about 5-7 hrs a day so it matters to me.

If it's something they can solve via drivers I'll give it a wait and see before I press purchase.
