Dunno what they are going to do with BF4 but wouldn't suprise me if theres not much performance difference up through low->high settings and then they add an "ultra extreme" setting level that basically turns the effects upto 11 and cripples anything thats not using GCN w/ Mantle.

I can't wait to see what it's capable of and hope it's not just another hype failure. Pretty confident it won't be as dice are hyping it just as much as amd are. It's been said for ages now that dx is the main thing holding back the pc where as most think it's consoles. Consoles have been around just as long as gaming computers and i believe but could be wrong that when dx came around to being the main api things started to slow down. I know ports are part of the problem but it's mainly coding that's holding back the pc. I read an article with a top amd guy years back where they were saying consoles were not the problem and he went into length why it was dx. Maybe mantle was in there plans back then.

When the hell are these 29X cards actually coming out?!

I check in here everyday and there's nowt new, such a bloody tease! :p

Some people are saying the 25th but it's definitely this month. It seems there's an nda on the release date which is pretty unusual. i think amd are holding back as much as they can because nvidia plan to counter straight away. It's a little like a game of poker.

There is ALWAYS NDA's for release dates, anyone who thinks otherwise has never signed an NDA ;)

AMD is better at keeping secrets than Nvidia, it's really as simple as that. Plus Nvidia both talks crap about release dates(480gtx) and likes to spoil parties, there is no 780ti release date is there?

I guess what i meant was we usually know a release date by this time but as of yet amd has made nothing official apart from we know its coming this month. Yea amd are really good at secrets especially the 4870 which shocked most people as the touted spec was so low compared to the actual card.

As much id like to see that ill be amazed if its true. Can't wait to find out though.

Seems to be the longest build up to a launch ever. Hope it's not an anti climax now. Early benchmarks look awesome, don't understand why not at least give people reviews and price. Shady..

Starting to loose interest now to be honest. All the build up for nearly 3 weeks and no proper benchmarks or prices, regardless of the NDA. Might just stick to my 6970's in xfire till next year and keep my cash for something else.

i know one person who has had a preorder with the motto "until it is released i don't want to know" if you don't like buildup its a good strategy... I happen to like the hype its quite funny watching opinions change as the thread progresses

Well its about money, a developer tend to do games where the market is.
that is consoles more than a PC so we as a gamer tend to be given a bad ported console game to PC, skyrim as an example.

Technically what Mantle will do is move the overhead from DX and reading between the lines it will do a lot for amd GCN arch. It will also do a lot for their cpu line up.

DX is fine due to its a jack of all trades, it just works if you write code along its guidelines. to fit all different tech its also inefficient and really no way around unless you do what amd done or make Microsoft fix DX by stripping things down which they only do to a new OS again money as a reason.

all in all, its money not your gaming experience they think about first.

It you compare what they can do with the 8-9-10 year old hardware designs on the Xbox360/PS3 with PC's the latter are ahead but not by as much as they should be - because DX is getting in the way. Hopefully this will move PC gaming ahead faster and make it simpler for the devs.

I think it's more to do with games being primarily developed for 8 year old console hardware.

So unless PC has been the lead platform (unusual) then you end up with decent looking games but nothing particularly groundbreaking.

The 'next gen' consoles should lead to much better looking PC games, even though they are still behind the curve, power-wise compared with PC's. They will certainly make porting games easier because they are essentially using PC hardware now (AMD CPU and GPU)

I am inclined to agree with you and both AMD and Nvidia have their own low level API's (Mantle and Nvapi (with Nvapi not being quite the same)) but devs just seem to want to work with an open source. DX/OpenGL/CL are what they know and understand. It is a hit to gamers but for better performance, AMD and Nvidia need to put devs into the ground level of game building. Maybe this way, we will be seeing higher performance with more detail.

You can use CPU processing to see physx in Borderlands 2.

Doesn't work in the Batman games though.

Randomly installed Arkham Asylum last night (Steam have taken out GFWL) and I wanted to test a few things

A) If I could turn on 3D without owning an Nvidia card

B) What the Physx was like on CPU only.

Well I couldn't enable the 3D from the graphics options menu, but it might just be a simple .ini file adjustment.

Re: Physx though: On the highest physx settings the game really slows down in a few scenes I've gone through (mainly fights with blackgate goons with bits of paper flying around)

But on the medium setting it works 100% fine.

Edit - I found the same thing on Mafia II to be honest when I completed it earlier this year.
