AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I'd usually agree with this for most yank reviewers but this guy never beats around the bush, most of his views are exactly like just you and me the consumer.

1. He says it isn't a TITAN killer which it isn't as it needs a massive percentage lead to be classed as a killer.
2. He says mantle needs to be successful to create competition.

I think most of us here can agree with those 2 main points he made.

I dont agree with either of these points.

1. If R9 290X trades blows with, or slightly beats Titan for £350 - £400 less, then in my book it's a Titan Killer. Performance should not be the only metric that is used to determine a Titan killer. GTX780 is already a Titan killer, if R9 290X has a decent ~15% average lead over GTX780 for the same price why would it not be considered successful?

2. Mantle does not need to be successful to create competition, R9 290(X) simply needs to beat Titan and GTX780 perf for a better price.

Wrong TITAN has been selling for 8-9 months, price doesn't make it a killer, you know fine well the majority of TITAN killer comments were based on performance so don't try to turn it into all about price.

All the amd fans slating his vid
Exaggerate much?

I meant all the AMD fans who've said something negative about it, not all AMD fans.

No he's talking trash, it's this very usual thing of making something up completely, saying someone failed to achieve this made up thing, calling it disappointing.

One person(forget who) said the 290x will ridicule Titan IN Bf4 alone, and WITH Mantle, but in that video he says AMD has been bigging up the card as a Titan killer.... and it failed to be that. AMD has not, is not, and will not tout this card as a Titan killer, so he's talking out of his ass instantly.

so your first point is irrelevant, it's no different to me saying, Titan needed to be a 290x killer and it isn't so it sucks.

As for performance percentage, again no, it does't have to kill it on performance to be a killer card in comparison.

Titan £800, R9 290x £800 5% faster, meh, if the R9 290x is £400 and 10% faster it IS a Titan killer. Outside of millionaires and lottery winners, a card is made up of more than it's performance. Cost, noise, performance are the big three for most people. If it does spank Titan in those area's it would indeed be a Titan killer to most people, but considering AMD haven't and won't market it as a Titan killer, it's all pretty irrelevant.

Second point, Mantle needs to be successful to create competition? No, it doesn't, Mantle could get in zero games aside from BF4, R9 290x is still a card that is significantly smaller while generally faster than Titan. THat is competition enough, more performance with Mantle helps, but it isn't required in any way.

From the EK blocks article:

Products are readily available for pre-order through EK Webshop and Partner Reseller Network. Due to embargo on the aforementioned graphics card the shipping will commence on October 25th 2013.

25th it is then???

Gotta love how people post their opinion as fact, not realizing that opinions are personal and individual. To you the 290X might be a Titan killer, to the next guy it isn't. Opinions are subjective people.

In my opinion the 290X is a Titan killer is terms of value VS performance if it's reasonably priced.

In terms of just performance maybe it isn't a Titan killer...

Subjective.

Plus, some of you AMD guys need to lighten up, someone even mentions AMD in a way you deem negative and you start the flaming.

I didn't say that you said ALL amd fans.
Apart from Mei, who just said that they guy was annoying, there was Matt who didn't slate it, but raised a couple of valid points regarding the tests.
You'll have to make your own mind up about Orangey :p

I don't recall amd promoting this as a Titan killer either tbh..

Who is Boomstick ^^^^ talking to?

Yeah I really don't know, the point being made is the guy in the video is taking the position that AMD have marketed (with all their NDA's) the 290x as a Titan killer than labelled it disappointing as a result.

If the card is or isn't a Titan killer isn't the question at all, it's that AMD have never come close to suggesting it or calling it such. It's making up a hyperbolic view of it, just so you can call it disappointing.

It's like if someone wanted to be down on I dunno, Messi scoring 90 odd goals last year, someone could say "but he said he'd score 120, so 90's a bit crap", which IF Messi said that, would be fine, if not, is just a lie to try and make the 90 itself seem worse by comparison. That is what happened in the review, he literally lied about what AMD have said about the card to infer it's worse than everyone expects.
