AMD Hawaii got Nvidia’s attention

Turning point?

The Hawaii event got Nvidia’s attention, we can definitely confirm that the event is something that Intel, Nvidia and many other companies have mentioned in our recent tour of Silicon Valley. The other thing that got Nvidia on its toes are the very successful Never Settle bundles that have created quite a lot of momentum in the market, even with mature products. A lot of people picked AMD over Nvidia just because of these attractive bundles and from a marketing point of view, AMD did a great job. It remains to be seen if the investment paid off, but it definitely helped AMD to sell many of its 7800 and 7900 cards. Our sources are telling us that Never Settle and Never Settle Reloaded really helped boost Radeon 7800 sales.

Our general feeling is that Nvidia now feels a bit intimidated by this launch, especially as all Nvidia talks these days is Tegra. Apparently this is what investors expect them to do, but the core business is suffering, at least as far as media buzz is concerned. Nvidia doesn’t mention Geforce nearly as much as it should and this is something that we were pointing out for quite some time to Nvidia.

Fuel for fun :D

I'll never forgive H for telling me that a 680 was faster in sleeping dogs than my 7970. Yes i hold a grudge. :D

EDIT

RE the debate above me...

AMD very much marketed the 7990 vs a titan as it was cheaper and faster, now considerably so. Putting aside the fact its a dual gpu of course.

We normally address what we call the ultra-enthusiast segment with a dual-GPU offering like the 7990. So this next-generation line is targeting more of the enthusiast market versus the ultra-enthusiast one.

MAINGEAR proved that CrossFired 7990s is a perfectly viable option for enthusiast gamers. It’s a solution they’ve been shipping to the market for awhile. With regards to performance, we’ve already released the AMD Catalyst 13.8 driver which addresses the frame pacing concerns outlined in that article. I think we’ve done an excellent job of addressing everything in that article. Today the 7990 is unequivocally the fastest video graphics card on the market.

I would assume if AMD says so, we will se an AMD chart with Titan that does it with some % and still, if its that fast and prices at 650 or whatever the 780 goes for in the world, well, talk about buzz and a winner and change of perception for amd.

I'll never forget Orangey's quote. :D

I think they will have "corporate weasel benchmarks" that proclaim masses of bungholiomarks in some proprietary/custom demos (TressFX), possibly featuring the classic polygonal pinup Ruby (as per invite card :D)

I look forward to seeing what flaws paid arm of Nvidia marketing can find with Hawaii ala pcper.

This is the one that I can not get my head round

LtMatts overclocked HD 7970 beating a R9 290X on this with a higher graphics score. The card they were using was supposed to be overclocked too.

Stop bringing that up, you know it gets me every time. :(

You were not even using a 4770k like they were either, what were you running your card on, nitro.:D

Good old air cooling of the accelero. :)

Oh come on you knew full well i was talking about single GPU's. Then everyone started barking about the 7990. Nvidia have an equivalent to that, the 690 so i don't see how you can compare the 7990 to the Titan fairly whether it be in terms of the market or the cost.

Relax Jono its all good my man. It was all in jest as your post was. :)

ALl jokes aside though...

Just wait another day and we'll have a better idea. I think we can assume worst case is equal or slightly slower/faster than a titan. Anything else will be a bonus. Main thing is the price. Keep it under £500 and offer a good games package, release the Eyefinity frame pacing drivers at the same time and they'll come up trumps.

I'm glad you said that, I was just about to report him for a rather serious personal attack. It will give him the chance to remove it.

Ah jeez Bru. Why have you gotta take everything so seriously all the time. :(

I can't remove what Jono has quoted im afraid. I'd like to think Jono knew it was just a bit of fun.

well I found it very offensive and it wasn't even directed at me, I wont report you for it but don't be surprised that the mods wont like it when they see it.

I sincerely apologise for offending you Bru, as well as Jono if he was offended as well. Would you like a written letter as well or will this suffice? :)

This made me chuckle :)

Have to be careful. See above ^.

Atta boy.

Let me just get back to this a bit.

Are you saying SB at 4.9ghz is better than haswell at 4.5ghz if the number of cards increases?

I find it very hard to believe that a much slower sandy in everything else would suddenly perform better when you actually add more cards. Sure, both will bottleneck 3 titans, but the sandy will bottleneck em quicker due to being less powerful than the haswell in all aspects. (I picked the clockspeeds on purpose, but haswell still beats sand at 400mhz less).

I'm ready to stand corrected with a benchy/review though :P

Being a sandybridge user at 4.8ghz i for one hope Kaap is correct and wish him well in all his future endeavours regarding cpu statements.

Does it beat sandy by that much in game benchmarks though? Typically you see like 1-2fps between stock 2700k/3770k in game benchmarks.

The good thing about the 7790 was it allowed them a trial run at GCN2.0. More performance at the same TDP. Now you're seeing the fruits of this work with this new card, Hawaii. 30% smaller die than titan, (or however im supposed to say it Orangey :p) for equal or faster performance (33% faster than a 7970ghz), better yields, (whatever that means :D) lower price. That's what i read anyway. ;)

My prediction is:

Slightly faster than the 780 but at the same price point. I am looking forward to seeing how much headroom is on the overclocks for both the core and memory.

Welcome back stranger. :)
