AMD ramps up its Gaming Evolved program

That's a good news thread successfully turned into a bad news thread, well done guys, i have to hand it to you you know how to play politics.

I'm actually interested to see what they will come out with on Monday, it would help them a lot to do a paper launch of the 8000 series right now.

I'm happy to talk to about all that but not in this thread, its completely off topic and puts a real downer of what is intended to be a positive thread.

A thread for exactly this sort of discussion already exists, so out of respect for Final8y and this threads topic of discussion can we move it to where it belongs?

It's not really off topic though is it? It's not directly on topic but how many threads on this forum are directly on topic?

Rroff's postings are on topic at a high level. I don't see the problem?

I see this branded a lot, but if they've got 2 consoles deals at this present moment ; 360 and Wii and they're getting situations where doubts are upon them (Although most are sensationalist) then I don't understand how people can use upcoming console deals as them not going anywhere.

Not that I think they're on the verge of collapse or anything. I just don't understand the logic of mentioning upcoming deals of which they essentially have now.

That said, I think they'll be quite a boom of AMD laptops, as I can readily see them available which I'm over the moon with.

In large part AMD have the gpu only, in the 360 and Wii, the next gen they'll have the CPU and GPU in the 360 AND the PS4, that is a vastly different situation.

Its also rumoured that it is basically AMD memory, AMD boards, meaning rather than a cheap GPU they are all but providing the entire system.

Also don't forget that the Wii is essentially old tech, tiny gpu's and a very low budget project. If you made a 360 gpu off a 2 gen old midrange tech, rather than pushing the latest features into the console gpu you're talking about a minor project vs a huge project.

Current gen, AMD have one major, one minor project, and for GPU only, next gen AMD have two major, one minor project, and both the major projects have gone from GPU only, to GPU, CPU, probably memory, and potentially other bits as well. Their console involvement is essentially going up by a factor of several times, not a tiny bit.

Either way, its not looking great for AMD, there was a lot of dead weight, but as many good people have gone as bad by most peoples accounts.

Fact is currently, if its worthwhile or not AMD needs to be able to execute faster, moving to bulk on the cpu, making the cpu design portable they'll be less reliant on one foundry, but then GloFo seem to be getting on speed, they were always going to have a difficult initial 3-4 years building a huge fab from the ground up and having to go through a lot of teething problems.

Trinity is very competitive but not well marketed. Performance is actually pretty good on a Piledriver but AMD are constantly being kicked in the teeth by Intel.

But then another thing should be factored in, a lot of people were basically betting against AMD, not massive but, the stock market picks a target, pushes the stock down, people buy it and talk it up, and make a killing.

One of the key things for AMD on how their stock can recover is, how much profit they are making on the consoles, you can get a great deal and make $50 per console sold, or a crap deal where you sell MS/Sony the rights to produce the chips for a lump sum and tiny royalties per unit sold and get almost smeg all money compared to how much it costs in R&D to come up with the designs.

However the overall scheme of things having ALL the consoles and EVERY game optimised for AMD hardware can't be overlooked, it will even help with plain old PC gaming benchmarks when it comes to Intel VS AMD.

You get quite a few people testing compilers and finding that AMD can often gain a decent amount of performance with the same software recompiled in something that isn't lets call it, a "pro Intel compiler". When games are compiled and optimised for AMD, if AMD have a less good cpu, the optimisation can close the gap, if AMD manage to produce a great CPU, they might pull ahead with the optimisation. They'll be pushing heavily threaded software optimisation which will help a octo core, etc, etc. Even if they didn't make a huge profit with consoles, the effect of having the gaming market optimised for their hardware will have far reaching consequences.

Try looking at some reviews with the latest drivers James2k. But I agree, the 690 is the better looking card, but I don't look at the card when gaming.

oh.. drivers again.. great..

anyway, looks like a brute force solution rather than a more efficient quieter cooler one in the 690. also ill wait for some more results before deciding.

edit: sorry for going off topic again.. bad james

The latest AMD drivers, in the majority of games/benchmarks push the 7990's performance ahead of the 690 to claim the overall fastest graphics card crown. Hopefully Nvidia will have something to counter 12.11beta with, but imo it's highly unlikely, due to the 690 being two midranged GK104 cores only.

Gaming has trully evolved in favour of AMD ;)

Yes it is the brute force solution, but it is faster overall. The latest drivers have boosted performance significantly in the AMD 7xxx series.

at the moment the 680 cores are anything but midranged. regardless of what they COULD bring out.

oh well, still waiting for some more reviews.. also i like my almost silent pc which is far faster than any 7970 single pc ;)

Brut force is for real men, and i certainly don't want it to look pretty :p
