AMD releasing an R9 380X

Literally just saw that on a UK site. Of course this is basically the card I wished existed before I bought my 380 (pro) but Apple had an exclusive apparently on the X version.

As long as it isn't priced too high, this should sit above the 280X finally and be a really nice card to own.

I really hope this is the 256bit version and not the 384 bit version otherwise it will just be a rebrand of the 280X which would suck.
 
Unlikely to be the 384-bit bus option imho, as it would be the only card in the current range to do so, rather than just reusing a 380 PCB.

2048 Stream Processors on GCN1.2 will still make it fit nicely between the 380 and 390, maybe the clock will be increased to 1000 (from the 970 of the 380)

Random Thought: What happens to failed Fury dies - any chance we might start seeing some 2048/2560/3072 Stream Processor parts trickle in somewhere, at some point?

Yup, and was exclusive to Apple. I'm quite surprised at this news because of that, and makes me wonder if it actually is real.

Now... all the Tonga 'pro's' (380's) I've seen appear to not be unlockable via bios flash, but with this release, I hope someone will have the balls to try it lol.

None of the SKUs have the full memory controller,and I would suspect that the R9 M295X used in the iMac only has a 256 bit memory controller due to TDP and PCB size limitations.

After all,Tonga is basically the same size as Tahiti.

The gaps are more or less the same.

At least we know where it will fit in, in the grand scheme of things and I suppose NVidia will respond with the 960ti, which will probably be a cut down 192bit GM204 chip.

Maybe they never released a 285x because it's performance would have been too close to the 290, along with Apples exclusivity so the 380x could be a very nice card indeed.

I don't think Tonga actually ever did have a 384-bit option. All that rumour seems to stem from the wccftech article you linked. (Which in itself references an interview that took place with Raja Koduri, which might have referenced Tonga). The block diagram is by Hiroshige Goto, who is a Japanese tech writer, so I would view that as speculation as much as anything.

Whereas than the official AMD block diagram shows 4 Shader engines, with 7 enabled computer units, 8x 32 bit memory controllers:

Guru3d link the same block diagram for their R9 380 review, but highlight the disable Computer unit in each Shader engine (i.e. 7 out of 8 enabled in each - which would make more sense with regards to yields rather than a whole Shader engine being disabled)

A 960ti without the bandwidth limitation of the original 960 would be a very nice proposition, but I doubt we will get one unless Nvidia's hand feels really forced.

A 380X would be fantastic as the 256bit bus should still be good with the already increased speed of ram compared to the 280x, and the colour compression tech in the 285/380 compared to the 280/280x.

I just hope the rumour is true.

(Also of note is that in China they released the 370X. The price is around 199 dollars) apparently, but that makes no sense as the 380 2GB is available for 199 dollars.)

It will be a 280x with a new sticker.

I have the same feeling, AMD's releases this year have been extremely dissapointing. For the first time in years, they're losing even the low budget battle. The 960 is ~£10 cheaper than the 380 but if you factor the power requirement difference, that's another ~£20 advantage(in PSU savings) for Nvidia.

It isn't a rebrand, Like the 285/380 and unlike the 280/280x it allows you to use features like Free-sync, I just read it was a 384bit but that's cool. I imagine it has performance around the 290/290x mark so it's a good card, That's also probably why AMD were happy to give Mac exclusive rights last gen so it wouldn't effect Hawaii sales.

Isn't the 380 a good bit faster though? As well as having ample bandwidth unlike the asthmatic 128? bit on the 960.
