AMD releasing an R9 380X

One of the chaps who works for WCCFTECH actually leaked some more information in the comments of this article:

If that 3DMark11 score is correct that places the R9 380X closer to an R9 290 than to the R9 280X!

This is with my stock Gigabyte WF GTX 970, 1354Mhz so quite a chunky factory overclock.

My CPU performance is somewhat higher so thats added to the score.

In FPS terms it appears to be about 30% behind, take off my 15% factory overclock maybe about 15%

With my 24/7 overclock.

It does seem odd to be releasing this now. Unless 14/16 nm cards are not coming as soon as we're hoping. I think many of us are hoping for early Q2 2016, but if they are releasing 300 series cards still, maybe it's closer to 2017 :/

Timing is everything. How many people will buy this when we're starting to gear up for a new generation of cards? Not long now...

People buying in this part of the market may be less interested in the new cards. More expensive chips are usually released first (for example the 960 came long after the 980/970 and is pretty much a very efficient GTX 680). If the price is right it could murder the GTX 960 imo.

Price is $249 according to that link.

So ~£200 here.

It will offer performance a little higher than a 280X. In fact the 280X has for several years given people the same price/perf the 380X will give, at pretty much the same price point.

Hardly going to set the world on fire, is it. Most people will have upgraded to the 280X or 960, and the 380X is pretty much a like-for-like replacement, only updated to the latest GCN.

Who is the market for this card? People who didn't want a 960, didn't want a 280X, but want a similar card for similar money, a few months before a major performance jump hits with a new generation?

OK, then.

I know loads of people who would not want to spend more than £200 on a new card and only play at 1080p. Unless,Nvidia release a GTX960TI,then the GTX960 will need to drop down even more.

You also do realise the R9 380 is equaling or exceeding the R9 380X and there is still a massive gulf between the £150 GTX960 and R9 380 and the £250 to £300 GTX970 and R9 390 cards especially at 1080P.

Plus on top of this the R9 380X at least offers Freesync compatibility and better tessellation throughput and even has the same VR featureset as the Fury cards.

I already said it was updated to the latest GCN. You're kidding yourself tho if you think VR or Freesync is going to drive sales of the 380X ;) People with cash for either are going to get something beefier like a 390 or Fury.

You'd also be more accurate if you said that the 380 is worse or equal in some games, and better in others, than the 280X. It isn't matching or bettering and never worse.

And how much better are you expecting to the 380X to be over the 380? Rumours that it would be "full Tonga with 384 bit bus" were wrong. So it's going to have a few more shaders enabled, and maybe 10-15% more performance, right?

Anyway, it seems like I'm peeing on your fireworks here. I'm sure the 380X will be a lovely card :p Kaap alone will buy 4 ;)
