AMD RX 480 Fails PCI-E Specification

dm I'm really starting to question your neutrality, or lack of it.

You are predicting a 50% increase in speed near enough for the 480 in 6 months. (In fact in your VR scenario you are predicting a 100% increase in speed?!?! 1.2*1.2*1.5 = 2.16).

Given your history of making predictions is less than stellar, I'm going to go get the salt.

e: Seriously, dm, are you really saying that the 480 will match a 1070 in 6 months? Amazing if true.

Saying this over and over won't make it true.

Nobody was demanding for 980ti perf for £200.

I thought we'd get 980 perf for ~£200, maybe a shade less £. Boy was I wrong!

But a 980 isn't a 980ti, by a long shot.

And please don't keep saying it's 390/X perf, when it's 970/390 perf in everything bar a couple DX12 benchmarks :p

The future may look better for this card, but the future is not now, and it doesn't perform like a 390X now. It just doesn't.

That I must agree. However, what I've seen is RX480 being compared to AIB 970s when it's ref with a blower cooler. I recall seeing a couple benches which were nearly on par with 970 AMP (close to 980(?)), just can't remember if they were using a ghetto cooler or the ref. It may very well be we get 980 perf or if we're very lucky a Fury with high end AIB RX480 (vapor-x comes to mind).

The Ti comment was aimed at hypers hoping for 980~Ti perf at maintream price. Then Gibbo bitchslapped them and now they're disappointed and angry :D

WCCF chasing clicks as usual. If there's been, say 10-20,000 RX480s sold all over the world then it's a dead cert a small number of those people will suffer a random component failure within days of buying their new card. Just normal failure rates would produce a few cases of dead or failing motherboards, which is what seems to be the case.

If we were getting dozens and dozens of reports of dead boards, that would be another matter completely.

Usually fairly accurate, ime. Certainly more so than those people who claimed the 480 would be near Fury levels of performance and are now saying it "failed to meet expectations".

DM was adamant that Pascal would arrive 6 months after Polaris.

It's reviewers. Multiple.

Not true, like many here he was going on the leaked information and rumours we had available at the time. He wasn't adamant, he was making a best guess.

Similarly I could claim you were adamant that 1070 would cost £320.

We all guess wrong from time to time but most of us are doing so from rumours or info we have at the time. Bringing up the fact someone made a bad guess or assuming alleged info is accurate is not something we should use to get one over on that person. We could end up making ourselves look very petty when it is demonstrated we are just as guilty of being adamant but wrong. ;)

It the usual BS from fanboys. They jump on any info they possibly can that shows their pet hate company in a negative light. They don't wait for actual facts, just run with the info because it fits their agenda.

The same folks that defended 3.5GB 970, or used to proclaim energy efficiency in GPUs was irrelevant when AMD were ahead. Or said that Nvidia drivers killing GPUs was BS. Or said nothing when some GTX 960 was having similar power draw issues.

Business as usual here.

Yup I agree. It's an AMD launch that is going really well, you have to expect rabbid fanboy response, both from consumers and those that work for certain media outlets :p Although that's more to do with kick backs etc.

Hahaha. Impeccable timing.

HELLO. THIS IS /u/ALKALADUR

I am the author of the reddit thread you have linked to, my reddit username is /u/Alkaladur.

The moderators on reddit have banned from the r/AMD subreddit.

In addition to this, my thread is now longer showing at the top of the subreddit.

Instead a thread that claims the RX480 is not out of spec, and that the PCI-E slots can use 300W is AT THE TOP OF THE SUBREDDIT.

Needless to say considering all the time and effort I put into exposing this problem, I am feeling very angry towards to the r/AMD subreddit.

IS FALSE.

the guy who is claiming it took out his pcie slot seems to have been overclocking the card.

"RX 480 8GB Overclocked to 1350MHz core (no overvolting, stock VRAM speed)"

that is in his sig.

hope it is not true though.

The RX480 CURRENTLY beats a 970 in Hitman be 30%, for it to be 50% faster than a 970 in DX12 games does not require it to get 50% faster from today.

Your inability to do maths is really not a good reason to have a pop at me.

Likewise, VR, Nvidia are also claiming a 100% speed increase in VR because it's been better designed for VR and to render more than one view at a time, this will have a huge increase in performance for VR, I never denied it would be the same for 1080, nor did I say that changes normal gaming performance. But should you go VR over the next two years then it's worth factoring in as a reason to get a RX480 over a 970.

I really hope they fix this high PCI-Express power draw issue with the AIB 8 pin cards

Because at the moment it has totally put me off the card
