AMD RX 480 Fails PCI-E Specification

Isnt the whole point of this 480 card was to be a upgrade for people who cant afford 300+ cards so and im just guessing here but a lot of customers who buy it could be using old hardware from 5 years or more ago and probably will be using cheap motherboards.

That may well be the case and as such if they get issues, they should be looking to get a replacement/refund ASAP should it affect them. Oh and be angry and let everybody know as well... as they should be angry.... This card is after all, a "save up for" card.

Don't get me wrong, AMD have to make this right SHOULD it become an issue. The very fact it is being discussed here could trigger more speculation in the media because we know they lurk....As it stands though... I have yet to see anybody raging about how their purchase does not work in their set up that is within the cards spec.

This has all the paranoia of the 970 Ramgate....

We need a name should it become thing....

Ill kick off...

Seeing that the most traction I have seen on this issue (It was there from launch) is from this thread... Then no they should not.

It most likely only affects older MB and possibly older PSU's near the top of their output.

There is an RMA/returns policy for new kit from most suppliers and if there is an issue then they can be returned or offered an AIB partners card when available with additional power. What I do find mad is that the reference only has one 6 pin....

That's the problem, it should have 8-pin, right now it's breaking an industry standard (dangerously in some cases, apparently). While it 'might be fixed' via drivers, it won't be without a toll. In any case, they better sort it out asap.

The 1070 would be much closer £320 if there wasn't a BREXIT. 379 RRP was around £320 with VAT, using the same conversion as the 1080 cards.

And no, DM was adamant that Pascal would be 6 months behind Polaris even when all the information indicated otherwise. All the rumours suggested Big Pascal announcement in April with 1080 using GDDR5X available in Q3. that is exactly what happened, as rumoured since Q3 2015.

Oh for dear sake, the 1070 launched at £375+ before UK voted to leave the UE, which is considerably higher than £320. So don't try pretending you were right apart from external influences. Your aim is to get one over on DM but you and I and everyone here has been wrong on many occasions. Regardless, my main point isn't that DM was or was not adamant it's that we all make mistakes and to bring this up makes you look petty and foolish.

  • Some were adamant 1070 was going to be £300 and 1080 was going to be £400. They were wrong.
  • Some were convinced (like myself) that RX 480 would be 390X level of performance and we were wrong.
  • Some believed the rumours RX 480 was failing at clocks over 850MHz and was delayed until Oct.

We all get it wrong from time to time so calling out an individual on it is petty.

The fix will involve a large drop in performance!

Update to the PCPer article >>

We are still working with AMD to learn about the solution to this power problem and I hope to have an answer later today. For now, we are looking around the office for some older, less expensive systems and motherboards to use to try and duplicate any system failures (shutdowns, etc.) that we have been reading about online.

The point is in time we would be seeing entry level 1070 at around 320 if there wasn't a brexit. Poor stock and limited AIB selection prevented that before Brexit, post brexit this will never happen.\

yes, I was wrong that on release day there was no 320 quid 1070 but that may well happen soon enough if we get PM with a backbone that throws out any idea of signing an Article 50.:D

Fools edition made sure we would not see any 1070s near msrp.

yeah, but if you took the cheapest 1080 that OCUK stocked (clown edition) and used that exact exchange rate (so same forex, same UK markup, same price gouging) you would have got a 1070 for 320 quid. That didn't happen at release and now will never happen.

May be it would never have happened regardless of Brexit but it is pretty sound logic that is the cheapest 1080 was 535 quid then the 320 is the starting price for 1070s, at launch poro stock and even more price gouging ensured otherwise.

Conservely, ideas that nvdia would be 6 months later than AMD were just propesterous fanboy claptrap since Nvidia had engineering samples back in December and made promises to supply chips to industry partners by April.

The voltage is dropping because the motherboard and PSU are struggling to provide the power demands of the 480 since it is going well above spec.

The drops are going into a menu or changing scene. I'd hate to think the cruddy PSU they were using if it can't handle a GPU of this size.

Not good this could kill the sales i am out for now even though i have a modern mobo (z170) still dont want to risk it

holding back to see how the non reference cards and 1060 pan out

one of there main selling points was low power consumption (not that true) and it turns out some older mobos cant even run them safely regardless of psu

dont know why they did not limit the pci slot power and ask for more from the psu use a 8 pin if necessary like the 1070

why didnt they just put a 8pin power plug on it.

They wanted market the RX480 as a low power card using < 150, not something which pulls 160w average load while gaming.

Somewhere along the lines AMD have clocked the RX480 far higher than the process and chip are comfortable with so it pulls far too much power, more than their initial PCB designs can cope with.

don't have DVI connectors which screws over my 120hz option on my aging BenQ monitor!!

:(
Why is DVI so vital like this, does only display port do 144hz

If you've got a modern motherboard you should be okay; iirc GPUs can legitimately pull 150w from PCIe 2.1 and above

How modern are we talking, I think the older motherboards may struggle or thats my impression they get less capable on these higher voltage requirements with aging of capacitors etc. Some disappointed people may have an excuse to also upgrade motherboard, cpu, etc I guess shops might be happy

If the card outperforms in its class then its less of a big deal I guess
