Just like I did with Ryzen 7, OcUK has conducted some testing and just like the Ryzen 7 1700 CPU was the sweet spot to buy especially when overclocking due to its lower TDP, nothing changes. The sweet spot in Ryzen 5 is the 1600 processor, due to its 65W TDP it runs cooler than the 1600X and can achieve the same levels of overclocking. In our testing all 1600 chips hit 3.90GHz and some were hitting as high as 4.1GHz when used with 120mm AIO coolers.

As such I and Overclockers UK highly recommend the Ryzen 5 1600 as a fantastic gaming CPU and also for professional use and with more and more software/games supporting multicore, Ryzen really is the future and the Ryzen 5 lineup with the forthcoming RX 5xx lineup will truly allow gamers to put together very capable gaming systems for under £1000.

For example a Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.90GHz + RX 480 8G + FREESYNC Monitor will be a totally amazing gaming platform that does not cost the earth like it does from AMD's rivals.

I am proud to say just as I did with Ryzen 7, AMD is truly BACK IN THE GAME!

Well done AMD! :)

I wish the 1400 had been a lot cheaper or just not launched. It'd be better if they'd added a GPU to it and had their first Ryzen APU.

This whole stick an x on the same chip thing is honestly a mess... fair play to you @Gibbo though for being honest and recommending the cheap one.

Personally I'm a bit lost as I have the cash for the top end but seems like nobody at AMD is giving you the gold standard of chip for the extra cash. Looking forward to the reviews!

Identical CPU so get the non X if you overclock, the X if you don't :)

That's not likely true when you look at the overclock results of ryzen 7 and I'd be more inclined to think the 5s are the same - 1600 hitting 3.8-4.0 with 1600x more likely at 3.9-4.1 and perhaps fractionally lower temps. For the sake of £30 I'd buy the X model. An AMD rep here swapped out his 1700 for the 1800x and got better results which says something. Happy to be corrected of course.

both the 1600 and 1400 oc to 4.0 in my testing but stability is not 100% So as with the 1700 i'd say 3.8 is likely on most chips 4.0 on some.

was running 1400 @ 3.9 3000 with little problems today :)

All the info out there says it's just luck. They're not binned. 8pack's tests show the same, the 1600 overclocks the same as the 1600X.

Brilliant :D the 1600 looks to be one hell of a chip.

On a side note could OCUK get the mobile site categories in line with the desktop site ? Its still missing the AM4 categories(probably costing you guys some sales from people not seeing items)
